Life as we know it is based on cells. These small units of life are the foundation of all living beings, from the simplest bacteria to human beings. They are the smallest unit of life that performs all vital functions necessary for life. Therefore, learning about their organization is essential to understand life itself.

There are two main types of cells: prokaryotic and eukaryotic. Prokaryotic cells are generally smaller and simpler. They do not have a defined nucleus or other internal structures called organelles. Eukaryotic cells are larger and more complex. They have a nucleus that houses the cell's genetic material and many different organelles, each with a specific function.

We will explore these two main categories, studying their structure, functions, and key differences. Additionally, we will consider the idea that all cells come from pre-existing cells, a fundamental principle in biology called the Cell Theory.

Cells are essential elements for understanding how living beings function. They are crucial in processes such as reproduction, growth, metabolism (the set of chemical reactions that occur in an organism to keep it alive), and heredity. Even in contemporary medicine, understanding cells is fundamental for treatments and therapies, as many diseases, such as cancer, are caused by cellular dysfunctions.

Furthermore, cells are also the focus of many emerging technologies such as genetic engineering and regenerative medicine, which aim to treat diseases by manipulating the patient's cells. Understanding the organization of cells allows scientists and doctors to develop more effective and innovative treatments.

Project Objective:

Detailed Project Description:

Student groups will be responsible for creating a 3D model of a eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic cell. The project will involve research, paper and pencil, and manual work to build the models.
