Background

Many times in our daily lives, we separate mixtures without even realizing it. When we filter coffee or orange juice, for example, we separate solids from liquids. The same happens when we infuse herbs in hot water to make tea.

Science studies these processes more in depth, categorizing mixtures and identifying the best methods to separate them. Mixtures can be homogeneous, where we can't see a difference between components like in air, or heterogeneous, where the components are visibly different like oil and water.

Mixture separation is essential in many industries and human activities. In medicine manufacturing, it is essential to separate beneficial substances from harmful ones. In the food industry, separation is used to obtain flours, oils, and essences among other things. Mixture separation methods are also used to recycle materials, preserving the environment.

Therefore, when studying this subject, we are not just learning theoretical science concepts, but learning how to apply this knowledge in various activities essential to life.

Hands-on Activity: “Unraveling the Mystery: The Art of Mixture Separation”

Project Goal:

The objective of this activity is to apply and understand how mixture separation methods work. Students will have the opportunity to directly experience how to separate different types of mixtures using specific methods such as decantation, filtering, and evaporation.

Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will receive a series of “mysteries” (i.e., different types of mixtures) and will need to plan and perform experiments to separate each mixture into its individual components.

Examples of “mysteries” include:

  1. Mystery 1 - Sand and salt mixture
  2. Mystery 2 - Oil and water
  3. Mystery 3 - Water and water-soluble ink

Groups will have one week to perform the experiments and prepare a report detailing their findings.

Required Materials:

In order to perform this activity, the following materials will be required:

  1. Three “mysteries” provided by the teacher
  2. Separation containers: plates, glasses or bowls (depending on the volume of the mixture).
  3. Paper filter or fabric filter (can be a coffee filter).
  4. Water
  5. Pot and stovetop (to evaporate water, if needed)

Step-by-Step Activity:

  1. Analyze each “mystery” the teacher provides and try to visually identify its components.
  2. Research mixture separation methods and decide the best method to use for each “mystery.”
  3. Conduct experiments to separate components from each “mystery.”
  4. After concluding experiments, gather and present each component.
  5. During the whole process, students need to record their observations, describe mixture separation steps, and record all results.

Project Submission:

Groups must turn in a written report in PDF format, which must contain:

  1. Introduction: Background on the subject, its relevance and application in the real world, as well as the goal of the activity.
  2. Development: Include the theory behind the subject, a detailed description of the activities performed, the methodology used, and the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: Students must conclude by restating their main points, demonstrating what they learned and the conclusions they drew from the project.
  4. Bibliography: All sources used must be properly cited.

This report is the students’ opportunity to show all they learned during the project, reporting not only the practical results, but also the theory behind the subject and how this knowledge can be applied in the real world.
