Contextualization

The organization of biological systems is one of the most fascinating and intricate areas of science. It is a complex network of interactions, where each component plays a vital role in making the whole function properly. This applies to the molecular level, passing through the cellular, tissue, organic, and reaching the complete organism.

Imagine the human body as a city full of complex and interconnected systems that work together to keep everything in order. We have the circulatory system, which acts as highways, transporting nutrients and essential materials throughout the body. The nervous system acts as a control center, transmitting messages throughout the body to regulate all activities.

The organization of systems is a key piece in characterizing life as we know it. This is because life arises from the combination of numerous parts that work together to perform specific functions. Without a well-organized system, many of the vital processes we know would not be possible.

Importance

Regarding practical application, a clear understanding of the organization of biological systems is essential for areas such as medicine and biology. In the case of public health, for example, understanding how different systems of an organism interact can lead to better methods of diagnosing and treating diseases.

Furthermore, the organization of systems can be seen in many other aspects of everyday life. By observing the world around us, we can see systems everywhere, from the organization of a city to even the internal functioning of a computer. Understanding the foundations of these systems can help us better understand and influence the world we live in.

Practical Activity: 'Unveiling the Biological City'

Project Objective

To investigate and deeply understand the biological organization systems by comparing them with the structures and systems found in a city.

Detailed Project Description

The student groups, formed by 3 to 5 participants, will build a model of a metaphorical city that mirrors the human body. Each body system (circulatory, digestive, nervous, etc.) will be represented by a corresponding sector of the city (streets, restaurants, control center, etc.). In addition, they will need to present the project to the class and prepare a detailed report that explains the logic behind their biological city.

Students should also consider how the systems of the 'Biological City' interconnect and work together, just like the systems of the human body.

This project goes beyond the Science discipline, also involving Geography (for understanding the organizations and structures of a city), Arts (for building the model) and Portuguese (for writing the report).

Required Materials

  • Materials to build models (cardboard boxes, colored paper, glue, scissors, etc.);
  • Books, websites, and videos for research;
  • Paper and pens for notes and report preparation.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Formation of groups and initial discussion about the project.
  2. Detailed research on the systems of the human body and also on city structures.
  3. Planning of the 'Biological City', thinking about which city elements correspond to each body system.
  4. Construction of the model, with rich details and clear evidence of the correspondence between city and human body.
  5. Preparation of a presentation to be made to the class, explaining the choices made in creating the model.
  6. Preparation of the report, which should include introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used.
  7. Presentation of the project to the class and report submission.

This project will require more than twelve hours per participating student to be executed, considering research, discussion, planning, model construction, presentation preparation, and report writing.

Project Deliverables and Connection with Activities

In addition to the model and presentation, students must submit a written report that explains the process of building the 'Biological City'. In it, it is extremely important that students elaborate on:

  1. Introduction: contextualization of the theme of system organization and its relevance, project objective, and justification for the chosen analogy (human body and city).

  2. Development: the theoretical concepts behind system organization, the methodology used for the project construction, and the presentation of results, explaining which systems were chosen and why.

  3. Conclusions: recapitulation of the main points of the project, explanation of the learnings obtained, and conclusions drawn.

  4. Bibliography: all sources of information used must be clearly indicated.

This report will serve as the project documentation, allowing students to reflect on what they have learned and what skills they have developed (time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, proactivity, etc.) throughout the process.
