Textual Genre: Comic Strip

Contextualization

Comics, also known as comics or graphic novels, are a form of visual communication that uses sequential images to tell a story. Although they are usually associated with youth entertainment, comic books are a medium with a long and rich history, and have been used to discuss complex and serious topics.

The use of sequential images to tell a story can be traced back to antiquity, with cave paintings and Egyptian hieroglyphs. However, the form of comics as we know it today began to take shape in the 19th century, with the advent of modern printing. It can be said that it is a textual genre that blends visual and narrative elements, creating a unique and impactful language.

The language of comics, with its text balloons, panels, and onomatopoeias, is immediately recognizable and has been adopted and adapted by other forms of media, such as cinema and television. This makes understanding and using the genre a valuable skill for today's students.

Importance and real-world application

Comic books are an important part of pop culture and have a significant impact on society. They serve as a form of entertainment, but also as a social commentary and a means of communication. Comic books can influence and be influenced by politics, culture, and society.

Furthermore, by creating and analyzing comic book stories, students can develop important skills such as understanding sequence and narrative, critical thinking, research skills, and artistic abilities. Creating comic book stories can be a fun and engaging way to learn about a variety of topics, from history and culture to science and mathematics.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Creating Our Own Comic Book Story

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is for students to create an original comic book story based on a current topic or of interest relevant to the class.

Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group must create a 6 to 8-page comic book story. This story should tell an original and engaging story that addresses a topic of interest or current relevance. The groups need to research the theme, create the plot, characters, and setting, as well as draw and color the comics.

Required Materials:

  • Paper or drawing software
  • Pencils or digital drawing equipment
  • Pens or digital coloring tools
  • Internet/computer for research

Step by Step:

  1. Research: The group must choose a topic of interest or current relevance to base the comic book story on. They should then research deeply on the chosen subject to be able to incorporate real aspects into the story.

  2. Scriptwriting: The group must create a plot for the comic book story. This should include the introduction, development, and conclusion of the story, as well as the description of the characters and settings.

  3. Sketch: Based on the script, the group must draw a sketch of the comic book story. This sketch should divide the story into panels and pages, and show where the text and images will appear in each panel.

  4. Final Art: The group must then finalize the art, drawing each panel in detail and adding colors.

  5. Text: The text should be added to the corresponding panels as planned in the sketch.

  6. Review and Finalization: The comic book story should be reviewed to ensure it aligns with the script and that there are no grammatical or spelling errors. Once reviewed, the comic book story can be finalized.

Project Delivery:

The project will be delivered in two parts:

  1. Comic Book Story: Each group must deliver the finalized comic book story. If possible, it should be digitized and sent in PDF format.

  2. Written Report: Each group must also deliver a written report on the creation of the comic book story. The report should follow the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. Students should detail the process of creating the comic book story and what they learned during this process.

    • Introduction: Brief explanation of the chosen theme and justification of its relevance. It should also contain a description of the project's objective.
    • Development: Detailed description of the process of creating the comic book story, including the research conducted, the creation of the script and characters, and the drawing of the comic book story. The report should also include an analysis of how the language of comics was used to tell the story.
    • Conclusions: Synthesis of the group's learnings during the project, highlighting the challenges and how they were overcome, as well as what was learned about the theme and about creating comic book stories.
    • Bibliography: List of sources used in the research and in learning the techniques of creating comic book stories.

Please note that the project's execution time should be 5 to 10 hours per student and the deadline for delivery is one month.
