Contextualization

Comics are a form of media that combines art and language to tell stories. Originating in the 19th century, this narrative form uses sequences of images and dialogue balloons to create a visual and written narrative. There are various genres within this media, including superheroes, crime, horror, fantasy, science fiction, biography, and many others.

Comics have a rich and complex history, with influences from various cultures and periods. They have evolved over time, both in terms of style and content. Initially, they were mainly seen as entertainment for children, but nowadays, comics are recognized as a legitimate art form and a powerful tool for communication.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Creation and Analysis of Comics

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to create their own comics using the concepts learned in class about the genre. In addition, they must critically analyze a peer's work, reinforcing the understanding of key concepts and stimulating effective collaboration and communication.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will have to create an original comic that involves the following key theoretical concepts: comic genres, comic elements (panels, balloons, onomatopoeias, etc.), narrative sequence, and visual language.

In addition to creating the comic, groups will also need to analyze another team's work, identifying the key theoretical concepts present and evaluating their execution in the story.

In addition to the Portuguese discipline, this project will also involve the Arts discipline, where students will have to apply their knowledge of drawing and visual composition.

This project should last approximately four weeks, with the creation of the comic requiring the most work, while the critical analysis and report writing will require additional time.

Required Materials

  • Paper, pencil, and eraser for creating the initial versions of the comics,
  • Various materials for creating the final versions of the comics (drawing paper, pens, colored pencils, etc.),
  • Computers with internet access for research and report writing.

Step by Step

  1. Formation of groups and definition of the comic style and story to be told.
  2. Research on the chosen style and creation of a comic story script.
  3. Creation of comic sketches and internal group discussion for adjustments and improvements.
  4. Creation of the final version of the comic story.
  5. Exchange of stories between groups and conducting the critical analysis.
  6. Report writing.

Project Delivery

The final project delivery will consist of two main parts:

  1. The comic created by the group.
  2. A written report containing:
    • Introduction: Contextualizing the theme and the project's objective.
    • Development: Detailed description of the comic creation process, including the key theoretical concepts used. Detailed description of the analysis conducted on the other group's story, with emphasis on the identification and discussion of key theoretical concepts.
    • Conclusion: Recap of the main points of the work, highlighting the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn.
    • Bibliography: References to all sources of information used.

It is important for students to make every effort to present a complete and quality work, both in the comic and in the report.
