Linguistic Variation: Regional Varieties

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring Regional Variations: The Linguistic Diversity of Brazilian Portuguese"

Project Objective:

  1. Understand and appreciate the regional varieties of the Portuguese language in Brazil.
  2. Expand vocabulary and comprehension of the country's cultural and linguistic differences.
  3. Develop research, teamwork, communication, and report writing skills.

Project Description:

This is a practical project where students will collaborate in groups of 3 to 5 people to research, document, and present the regional linguistic variations of Brazilian Portuguese. Each group will be responsible for researching and collecting data about a region of Brazil, identifying its linguistic characteristics, local expressions, and differences in language usage.

The groups will produce a slide presentation and a written report describing their findings.

Required Materials:

  1. Internet access for research
  2. Notepad for notes
  3. Slide presentation software (Google Slides, Microsoft PowerPoint, etc.)
  4. Text editing software for report writing (Google Docs, Microsoft Word, etc.)

Step by Step:

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students and assign a region of Brazil to each group.

  2. Each group should research the linguistic variation of the assigned region. They should look for examples of regional expressions, lexical, grammatical, and pronunciation differences compared to standard Portuguese.

  3. During the research, students should take detailed notes on their findings.

  4. After completing the research, each group should create a slide presentation highlighting the linguistic variations found. The presentation should include examples of regional expressions and words, as well as explain the possible origins and meanings of these variations.

  5. In parallel, each group should produce a written report containing the research details. The report should be divided into the following sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

    • Introduction: Students should create a context for the researched region, explaining its historical, geographical, and cultural aspects, and how these factors may impact linguistic variations.

    • Development: In this section, students should detail the research conducted, presenting and explaining the linguistic variations found. Additionally, they should discuss the influence of these variations on the cultural identity of the region.

    • Conclusions: Students should summarize the main points of their research, highlighting the learnings and impressions about the linguistic variation of the studied region.

    • Bibliography: Students should list all sources of information used during the research.

  6. Each group should present their research to the class in a presentation session.

Project Deliverables:

Each group should deliver the slide presentation and the written report containing the conducted research. The deliveries will consist of:

  1. Slide Presentation: Where students should use images, graphics, and texts to illustrate the linguistic variations found during the research.

  2. Written Report: Should contain, in text format, the research conducted by the group, following the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. The report will be the opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of the topic, the research and writing skills developed. Additionally, it is in the report where they will connect the theory about linguistic variation with the practical examples observed during the research.
