Contextualization

Linguistic variation is a phenomenon that consists of the existence of different ways of speaking within the same language. Differences can be perceived in pronunciation, vocabulary, syntax, and even in semantics. This phenomenon is natural and present in all languages, reflecting the cultural, regional, social, and historical diversity of a people.

When we talk about Portuguese, we actually have a diversity of 'Portugueses', each with its own particularities, resulting from the history and culture of the regions of Brazil. These are the so-called regional varieties. Each region of Brazil has its expressions, accents, and particular uses of the language. The 'mineiro', the 'carioca', the 'gaúcho', the 'baiano' - all speak the same language, but in slightly different ways.

Introduction

Our project will address these regional differences in the Portuguese language. Our goal is to better understand how these variations occur, why they happen, and how they contribute to the richness of our language. We also want to value linguistic diversity and understand that there is no 'correct' way of speaking and other 'incorrect' ways. All variations are equally legitimate and express identities and cultures.

We will learn about the differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and even syntax among different regions of Brazil. We will get to know the language spoken in the northeastern backlands, in the Amazon, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, on the beaches of Santa Catarina, in the metropolises of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and in many other places.

At the end of the project, we hope that you will be able to better understand our language, value all its variations, and, who knows, even identify and catalog the differences in your own way of speaking.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Exploring the Regional Linguistic Variations of Brazil'

Project Objective:

This activity aims to deepen students' exploration of the linguistic varieties of Brazilian Portuguese in a playful and interactive way. In addition, it is expected that students develop teamwork, research, critical analysis, and idea presentation skills.

Detailed Project Description:

Students should form groups of 3 to 5 members and choose a Brazilian region to investigate its linguistic peculiarities. Each group should research how people in that region speak, what are the most common expressions, the pronunciation of some terms, and other linguistic aspects that are characteristic of that region.

The final product of this research will be the creation of a 'Regional Linguistic Guide', which should present the main information collected about the linguistic variation of the chosen region in a creative and informative way, and an oral presentation, exposing the discoveries made during the research.

Required Materials:

• Computer with internet access for research;
• Notebook for notes;
• Cardboard, colored pens, glue, scissors for making the 'Regional Linguistic Guide' (optional - can be done digitally);
• Camera or smartphone for recording the oral presentation (optional - the presentation can be live).

Step by Step:

1. Formation of groups and selection of the regions to be researched;
2. Research on linguistic variation in the chosen region. Take notes on the main information, such as typical words and expressions, the region's accent, grammatical differences, etc;
3. Organize the collected information and develop the 'Regional Linguistic Guide'. Being creative in presenting the information is essential;
4. Prepare and rehearse the oral presentation. It is important to ensure that all group members actively participate in the presentation;
5. Delivery of the 'Regional Linguistic Guide' and oral presentation to the class.

The activity, from research to the delivery of the 'Regional Linguistic Guide', should be completed in one week.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, each group must deliver the 'Regional Linguistic Guide' and make an oral presentation to the class.

Students should write a group report on the project, following the format of an academic report with the following topics:

1. Introduction: Provide context for the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
2. Development: Explain the theory behind linguistic variations, describe the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
3. Conclusion: Conclude the work, summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
4. Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
