Textual Typology: Descriptive Practices

Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

The study of textual typology is essential for skillful language and writing construction. Descriptive practices, in particular, play a vital role as they evoke visual images, sensations, and experiences through words. They require strategic skills in sentence construction and word selection, allowing readers to engage more deeply with the material.

Descriptive texts focus on detailing the characteristics of people, places, objects, or situations, leaving the reader with a clear mental image of what is being described. This type of text uses not only nouns and verbs but also detailed adjectives and precise adverbs to portray an image faithful to the reader.

The ability to produce accurate and engaging descriptions is a valuable skill, not only in linguistic disciplines but also in others such as natural and social sciences. Detailed descriptions can be used to express scientific observations, describe historical events, or even portray scenes in a story.

Connection to the Real World

In the digital age, the need for the ability to describe adequately becomes increasingly important, whether in a personal blog, a professional report, or in creating content for social media. A detailed and engaging description can attract attention and retain the interest of readers or the public.

Furthermore, in various professions such as journalism, marketing, advertising, or even in scientific fields, the ability to write accurate descriptions is essential for communicating ideas, concepts, and information clearly and captivatingly. Therefore, the study of descriptive practices is relevant and applicable in many aspects of everyday and professional life.

Activity

Title: "The Landscape Through Our Lens: A Descriptive Adventure"

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to expand students' understanding of descriptive textual typology, enhancing their ability to detail scenarios, objects, and people clearly and engagingly. This cross-curricular project combines Portuguese with Arts and Natural Sciences, spanning over a period of two to three weeks.

Detailed Description

In this project, students, in groups of 3 to 5, will explore and vividly describe a local landscape (it can be a park, a local monument, a historic building, a square, etc.). Each group will select a location, visit it, collect data, take photographs, study its historical and natural aspects. Subsequently, they will produce detailed descriptive texts, an informative blog, and an oral presentation to share their findings.

Required Materials

  1. Digital camera or cell phone with a camera
  2. Notebook for notes
  3. Materials for blog production (computer with internet access)
  4. Materials for presentation (cardboard, colored pencils, markers, etc.)

Step by Step

Phase 1: Preparation and Research

  1. Groups will select an area of interest for their descriptive exploration.
  2. They will conduct preliminary research on their chosen location using reliable sources.
  3. They will plan a visit to the location, outlining a plan detailing the information they want to collect, the aspects they wish to photograph and observe.

Phase 2: Visit and Data Collection

  1. During the visit, students should take various photos of the location, capturing different angles, features, and peculiarities.
  2. They should also take note of distinctive characteristics, color, texture, smell, sound, among other aspects.
  3. If possible, interview people who frequent or work at the location, collecting different perspectives.

Phase 3: Creation of Descriptive Texts

  1. After the visit, each group member should select a photo and write a detailed textual description of it.
  2. They should work on developing their descriptions, using relevant adjectives, adverbs, and verb tenses.
  3. They will review the descriptions and make improvements with the help of peers and the teacher.

Phase 4: Creation of Blog and Oral Presentation

  1. With the descriptions ready and the information collected, the group must now create an informative blog about the visited location.
  2. Additionally, they should create an oral presentation to share their findings with the class.

Final Products

  1. Descriptive text from each group member: Each student must submit a descriptive text based on the chosen image. This document should follow the following format: Introduction, Development (Detailed description of the image), and Conclusion.
  2. Group's informative blog: The blog should contain the description of the location, the captured images, and the collected information, as well as a conclusions section about the importance of the chosen location.
  3. Oral presentation: The group must present their findings and experiences to the class, showing their images and reading excerpts from their descriptions.
  4. Final learning report from each group member: Each student must write a learning report including: a) Introduction explaining the purpose of the project; b) Development detailing the activity carried out, c) Conclusions with the learnings obtained; and d) Bibliography used.

By the end of the project, students will have improved their descriptive skills, learned about the importance of adjectives and adverbs in a description, and acquired research, information organization, and oral presentation skills.
