Contextualization

Life on Earth is diverse and complex, with each organism interacting with its environment and with other organisms in specific ways. The ways in which organisms interact with their environment and with each other is what we call ecology. Within ecology, there are several categories that help us understand these complex interactions. One of these categories is biocycles.

Biocycles are a way of categorizing the biosphere, grouping the environments and organisms that live in them according to the characteristics of the environment: terrestrial, aquatic, and transitional. Within these environments, we have biomes, which are biological communities characterized by the dominant vegetation type and associated fauna, conditioned by the climate and geology of the location.

Therefore, understanding biocycles and how they interrelate is essential to understand the complexity of life on Earth.

The importance of biocycles goes beyond the field of biology. Understanding these categories and the interactions that occur within them can help us understand and predict changes in ecosystems and plan conservation and restoration actions. Furthermore, the study of biocycles is directly related to issues of sustainability and conscious use of natural resources.

Understanding biocycles also involves understanding how human activities can affect them, and how these alterations can, in turn, affect human life. It is an important tool for predicting climate changes, protecting biodiversity, and managing natural resources sustainably.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Biocycles in Focus

Project Objective:

Students will investigate, analyze, and present an in-depth research on a biocycle of their choice (epinocycle, talassocycle, or limnocycle), highlighting its main characteristics, the role it plays in the biosphere, and how human activities affect them.

Detailed Project Description:

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, each team will choose a biocycle to be the focus of their research. Using a variety of tools and resources, students will conduct a detailed investigation of their chosen biocycle, generating a research report and a visual presentation to share their findings with the class. The project will be carried out in three main phases: research and data collection, analysis and synthesis of information, and creation of report and presentation.

Necessary Materials:

  • Internet access for research
  • Materials to create visual presentations (e.g., posters, PowerPoint presentations, etc.)
  • Reference and textbook materials on biology and ecology
  • Text editing and presentation software

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Group Formation and Biocycle Selection: Students will form groups of 3 to 5 people and choose a biocycle for their research.

  2. Initial Research and Project Plan: Each group will start with initial research to acquire a basic understanding of their chosen biocycle, including its main characteristics, examples of organisms that live there, and any specific problems or issues related to that biocycle. Based on this preliminary research, the group will develop a detailed project plan, including specific tasks for each group member.

  3. Data Collection and Analysis: Based on their plan, students will proceed with data collection. This may involve reading scientific articles, books, and reliable websites, conducting interviews with experts, analyzing existing data, etc. They should focus on collecting information that will answer the research questions they identified in their plan.

  4. Information Synthesis: After data collection, the group will analyze the information they have gathered and start organizing their findings. This will involve group discussions to determine the most important information and how to present it clearly and attractively in the report and presentation.

  5. Report and Presentation Creation: Based on their discussions and analysis, the group will create a detailed report of their research and a visual presentation to share their findings with the class. The report should follow the format of a scientific report, with sections for Introduction, Development (including Methodology and Results), Conclusion, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables and How They Connect with the Suggested Activities:

Upon completion of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. Research Report: Includes all research conducted, the methodology used, the results obtained, and a discussion around them. This document will be the main way to assess students' theoretical understanding of biocycles.

  2. Visual Presentation: A creative way to show the collected and analyzed information. This part of the work aims to assess students' ability to synthesize information and present it clearly and attractively, as well as their communication and teamwork skills.

  3. Individual Reflection: Each student must write an individual reflection on the project, including what they learned, what skills they developed or improved, and how they believe the project contributed to their understanding of the biocycles topic.

  4. Peer Evaluation: Each student must also conduct a peer evaluation, assessing the contribution of each team member to the project. This will encourage individual responsibility and effective teamwork.

Students should keep in mind that the quality of the report and presentation, as well as the individual reflection and peer evaluation, will play a critical role in their final project assessment.
