Breathing is a vital process that allows us to obtain the necessary oxygen for cellular respiration and eliminate carbon dioxide, a byproduct of this process. There are various methods by which different animals perform this vital process, ranging from lungs, gills, to even the skin! But why are there different respiratory systems? How do they work? And how do they relate to the environment in which each animal lives? In this project, we will explore these questions by studying the respiratory system of different animals.

Biology is the science that studies life and living beings, and one of the pillars of this discipline is the understanding of organism physiology. Among the physiological systems, the respiratory system is among the most crucial, as it is responsible for the gas exchange necessary for the organism's survival. Each animal has a respiratory system adapted to its environment and lifestyle, giving us an incredible diversity of forms and functions.

Understanding the respiratory system of different animals helps us comprehend the great diversity of life on Earth. Furthermore, it is basic knowledge for professions such as veterinary, biology, or medicine. Additionally, it can help us better understand how our own bodies function. Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Breathing Life: An Exploration of Animal Respiratory Systems'

Project Objective

This project aims to study and understand the diversity of the respiratory system in different animals. Students will analyze how animals breathe in various living conditions, identifying adaptations to different environments and the mechanisms involved.

Project Description

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, each team will be responsible for choosing three different animals that use different breathing systems (for example, one with cutaneous respiration, another with gills, and another with lungs). With these animals in mind, students should investigate how these animals breathe, the adaptations of these animals to their respective environments, and how these respiratory systems support the vital activities of these animals.

To complete this task, students will need to conduct bibliographic research, watch videos, and interview professionals in the field (if possible) to gather sufficient information.

• Paper and pen for notes

Activity Steps

1. Group Formation: Each group should consist of 3 to 5 students.
2. Animal Selection: Each group should choose three animals with different respiratory systems.
3. Research: Start researching the respiratory system of each of the three chosen animals. Take note of all important details about how they breathe, how their system adapts to the environment, and what the distinct characteristics are.
4. Interviews (optional): If possible, interview a professional in the field (biologist, veterinarian, etc.) to obtain more detailed information about the respiratory systems of the chosen animals.
5. Research Report Writing: Based on the collected information, each group should write a research report with the following sections:
   • Introduction: Provide context on the topic, its relevance and real-world application, and the objective of this project.
   • Development: Explain the theory behind the respiratory systems of the chosen animals, describe the research process, and present and discuss the results obtained.
   • Conclusions: Summarize the main points of the work, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.
   • Bibliography: List the sources used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
6. Presentation Development: Create a presentation to share the results of your research with the class.

Each student should dedicate two to four hours to complete this activity, and the deadline for submitting the report and presentation is one week from the start date.
