Contextualization

Excretion is a vital process that occurs in all living organisms, being responsible for the elimination of metabolic waste from our bodies. In the context of human beings, the main form of excretion is urine. But have you ever stopped to think that there are other forms of excretion? And that the form of excretion can vary according to the type of organism?

In this project, we will discuss the different types of excretion found in various organisms, from bacteria to mammals. Furthermore, we will understand the logic behind these different methods of excretion and how they are closely related to the survival and evolution of organisms.

Introduction

Excretion is the function through which organisms eliminate substances that are in excess in the internal fluids and cannot be used by metabolism. There are three main forms of excretion in animals: ammonia, urea, and uric acid, and the choice between these three types depends largely on the environmental conditions in which the organism lives.

Ammonia is highly toxic and soluble in water, therefore, it is the predominant form of excretion in aquatic animals (ammonia is diluted in water). Urea is less toxic and requires less water to be diluted, thus, it is the predominant form in terrestrial animals. Uric acid is slightly toxic, insoluble in water, and is the predominant form of excretion in animals living in dry environments, as it helps to reduce water loss.

In this project, we will delve into the complexity of excretion systems and how they adapt to different environments and lifestyles. We will explore experimental approaches for observing and understanding excretion.

Practical Activity: Exploring Excretion Systems

Project Objective

The project's objective is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the different types of excretion (ammonia, urea, and uric acid) present in animals, as well as to understand the implications of these methods of excretion on the adaptation of organisms to their environments. In addition, students will develop cross-cutting skills such as teamwork, time management, and problem-solving.

Project Description

For this project, student groups (3 to 5 students per team) will create detailed interactive multimedia presentations on the different types of excretion. Each group will choose a single type of excretion to focus on and will research, design, organize, and present their findings in a creative and engaging way.

Required Materials

The project does not require specific materials other than internet access for research, a computer for creating the presentation, and writing materials for the report.

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: Groups of 3 to 5 students will be formed. Each group will choose the type of excretion they want to explore: ammonia, urea, or uric acid.

  2. Research: Each group will conduct extensive research on their chosen type of excretion. The research should include, but not be limited to: characteristics of the type of excretion, which types of animals excrete in this way, and how the method of excretion influences the biology and behavior of the organism.

  3. Interdisciplinary Work: In addition to relating the theme to biology, students must integrate two other components: Chemistry, to explore the substances involved in excretion, and Geography, to relate the type of excretion to the organisms' habitat and discuss the influence of the environment on determining the excretion strategy.

  4. Presentation Creation: Groups will create an interactive multimedia presentation highlighting the most important points of their work. Students can use any presentation format they prefer.

  5. Presentation: Groups will present their work to the class. Here, students will be encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback.

  6. Report Writing: After the presentation, groups will prepare a detailed report covering: Introduction (theme, relevance, and project objective), Development (theory, detailed activity, methodology, and results), Conclusion (key points, learnings, and conclusions about the project), and Bibliography (sources used).

Project Deliverables

  1. Multimedia Presentation: A presentation containing all the highlighted points of the research conducted. Students will be free to choose the presentation format they prefer (slides, video, digital poster, etc.)

  2. Report: A detailed written report, including Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. This report should provide a complete record of the project, from the choice of the theme, through the methodology used to the results achieved.

In the document writing, it is important for students to clarify the connection between theory and activities carried out. The report should complement the presentation, providing additional details and commenting on any difficulties encountered during the project. In addition, students should express what they have learned from the experience, both in terms of biological knowledge and in the development of socio-emotional skills.

It is important to emphasize that both the presentation and the report will be evaluated not only for technical content but also for the clarity of communication, creativity, and originality.
