Contextualization

Bacteria are the most abundant organisms on Earth. These microscopic beings, which do not have a defined nucleus, are essential for life as we know it, participating in various processes on our planet, such as the decomposition of organic matter and nitrogen fixation. In addition, bacteria have immense morphological, metabolic, and genetic diversity, making them extremely adaptable to different environments.

However, despite being fundamental for life, bacteria can also be pathogenic, causing various diseases in humans, animals, and plants. Thus, understanding these microorganisms, their characteristics, functions, lifestyles, and relationships is crucial for Biology.

Introduction

We will start our project by addressing the general characteristics of bacteria. What are their structures and functions like? What are the main forms of bacterial life? How do they reproduce and adapt to different environments? There are many questions, and we are just getting started.

Next, we will focus on pathogenic bacteria, those that cause diseases. How do they infect hosts? What are the main forms of transmission and the symptoms they cause? What are the body's defenses against these invaders?

Finally, we will discuss the role of bacteria in nature and society. How do they participate in biogeochemical cycles? What is their importance in industry and medicine? How is bacterial resistance to antibiotics affecting our health and what can we do about it?

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring the World of Bacteria"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to allow students to delve into the study of bacteria through research, discussion, and presentation, to better understand their characteristics, functions, forms of life, and the role they play in the world.

Detailed Project Description

Groups will be formed by 3 to 5 students. The activity will consist of an in-depth research on a specific topic related to bacteria agreed upon with the teacher, followed by a debate among the groups and culminating in a final presentation.

Required Materials

  • Books, scientific articles, reliable websites on the subject.
  • Presentation software (PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, etc.)
  • Materials for posters (Paper, Pens, Paints, etc.) - optional.

Step by Step

  1. Formation of groups and distribution of research topics. Topics may include: Beneficial Bacteria, Pathogenic Bacteria, Bacteria and the Nitrogen Cycle, Bacteria and Industry, Bacterial Resistance to Antibiotics, among others.
  2. Research on the topic: Each group must conduct in-depth research on the corresponding topic. Information should be gathered from various sources and discussed within the group to establish the main points to be addressed.
  3. Preparation of the presentation: Each group will prepare a 15-20 minute presentation on the topic, which will include a brief introduction to bacteria, a detailed explanation of the topic, the relevance of the topic in the real world, and a brief debate proposing solutions or alternatives related to the topic (if applicable). The presentation can be in digital format (Slides) or physical (Poster).
  4. Presentation and debate: Each group will present their topic to the class. After the presentation, there will be a question and answer session, where other groups will have the opportunity to question and comment on the presentation.
  5. Writing the report: After all presentations and debates, each group will write a report detailing the work done, including the introduction, development, conclusions, and references.

Project Deliverables

The project will be completed with the delivery of two parts: The presentation and the report.

The presentation should be clear and informative, covering all the main aspects of the topic and demonstrating a deep understanding of bacteria and their specific topic. The presentation will be evaluated for both content and clarity of communication.

The written report should essentially contain four sections:

  1. Introduction: It should introduce the topic and explain the relevance of bacteria in the studied reality.
  2. Development: In this section, students should detail the theory behind the project topic, describe the activity, the methodology used, and the results obtained.
  3. Conclusions: Here, students should discuss the main learnings obtained through the project and what they concluded about the topic studied.
  4. Bibliography: The references used should be listed and formatted according to ABNT standards.

The report will be evaluated for clarity, quality of writing, depth of understanding demonstrated, and correct citation of sources.

Finally, the student should reflect on the technical and socio-emotional skills acquired during the work and mention them in the conclusion of the report.
