Animals: Digestive System

Context

The digestive system is essential for an organism's life. This system is responsible for transforming food into nutrients and eliminating waste from the body, thus ensuring the maintenance of the vital functions of the living being.

Digestion involves many complex processes that vary depending on the type of organism being discussed. However, in general, we can describe digestion in three stages: mechanical digestion, chemical digestion, and absorption. Mechanical digestion is the process of physically breaking down food, occurring primarily in the mouth and stomach. Chemical digestion is the process of breaking down food at the molecular level, involving the action of various enzymes. Finally, absorption is the process by which nutrients are transported from the digestive system to the rest of the body.

In animals, there are basically two types of digestion: intracellular and extracellular. Intracellular digestion occurs internally in cells and is characteristic of unicellular organisms. In contrast, extracellular digestion occurs outside of cells, in a specific digestive system, and is characteristic of multicellular animals. Each type of digestion has its advantages and disadvantages, and different types of animals have evolved to adapt to different types of food and environments.

Now, why is it important to study digestion in animals? The study of animal digestion is essential because it helps us understand how different animals have evolved to feed in different ways and in different environments. In addition, understanding the physiology of animal digestion can help us better understand our own digestion and allow us to make better and more informed dietary choices. Project Objective

To deepen the understanding of intracellular and extracellular digestion processes in different animals through research and use of multimedia tools (drawings, diagrams, infographics, videos, etc.) and the writing of a report.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group must choose a characteristic animal of intracellular digestion and one of extracellular digestion. It is important to choose animals that have digestive systems that can be easily researched and understood.

Each group must then research in detail the digestion processes that occur in these animals, including the different stages of digestion, the enzymes involved, and how these processes vary between the two types of animals. In addition, the group must research how the environment and diet of each animal affect its digestion process.

Each group should present their findings in the form of an "Animal Digestion Atlas". This atlas should be a visual and textual representation, including drawings, diagrams, infographics, photos, and videos, describing the digestion processes in the chosen animals.

Materials Required

Computer with Internet access, image editing software (can be any simple program like Paint, GIMP, Canva, etc.), paper and pens for drafting and brainstorming.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Formation of groups and choice of animals.
  2. Research on the digestion processes in the chosen animals.
  3. Group meetings to discuss findings.
  4. Planning and creation of the "Animal Digestion Atlas".
  5. Review and finalization of the atlas.
  6. Report writing.

The estimated time to complete this activity is two to four hours per student. Remember that this time includes research, atlas creation, and report writing.

Project Deliverables

The project consists of two main parts: the "Animal Digestion Atlas" and the report.
