Pollution is a global phenomenon that affects all forms of life on Earth and degrades the quality of the environment in which we live. Our project will address air pollution, its causes, effects on living beings and the environment, as well as possible solutions to the problem.

Air pollution is generally caused by the release of polluting gases or particles into the air that can cause harm to living beings and the environment. Sources of air pollution can be natural, such as volcanic eruptions and forest fires, or anthropogenic, such as the burning of fossil fuels, industrial production, and waste incineration.

Air pollutants can be classified as primary and secondary. Primary pollutants are those that are emitted directly from a source into the atmosphere, such as sulfur dioxide from a coal-burning power plant. Secondary pollutants are formed in the atmosphere when primary pollutants react with other atmospheric components, such as ozone.

Significance

Air pollution has numerous harmful impacts on human health, the environment, and the economy. It can cause various respiratory diseases, heart diseases, and even cancer. Additionally, it harms soil and water quality, interferes with plant growth, and contributes to climate change.

The effects of air pollution are not only localized but also have a global reach. For example, atmospheric pollutants can travel long distances carried by the wind, thus affecting regions far from their emission sources.

Understanding air pollution and the problems it causes is crucial to taking effective measures to reduce it. Through this project, you will be encouraged to explore more about the causes and effects of air pollution, as well as to research and propose possible solutions.

Practical Activity

Title: Monitoring and Combating Air Pollution

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to study the impacts of air pollution and develop a proposal for a real air pollution problem in the local community. This project will combine concepts and techniques from Biology and Chemistry.

Detailed Project Description:

Each group will be responsible for investigating the air pollution situation in their locality, exploring causes, consequences, and possible solutions. This project will allow students to better understand the problem of air pollution and contribute with innovative solutions.

Required Materials:

• Computer with internet access
• Digital camera or cell phone with camera
• Notebook for notes
• Pencils and pens

Detailed Step-by-Step:

1. Research and Data Collection: Research the main air pollutants, their impacts on health and the environment, and try to understand how they are generated. Identify the main sources of air pollution in your locality.

2. Photographic Record: Take a photographic record of the identified sources of pollution in the previous step and any observed impacts on the environment.

3. Interviews: Interview residents, experts, and/or local authorities to understand their perception of air pollution, its causes, and consequences. Document all collected information.

4. Solution Proposal: Based on your research, create an action plan to address air pollution in your locality. This plan may include suggestions for reducing pollutant emissions, awareness campaigns, government actions, among other ideas.

5. Presentation: Prepare a presentation for the class, including photos, collected data, and the proposed action plan.

This project should be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will last for about two weeks.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

1. Written Report: This document should contain an Introduction (contextualizing the theme, its relevance, and the project's objective), Development (explaining the theory, detailing the activity, the methodology used, and presenting the results), Conclusions (summarizing the main points, explaining the learnings and conclusions about the project), and Bibliography.

2. Oral Presentation of the Project: Each group will make an oral presentation of the project to the class, explaining the process carried out, the results obtained, and the proposed action plan. This is an opportunity to demonstrate your communication and teamwork skills.

3. Photographs and Interviews: The taken photos and interview transcriptions should also be delivered as evidence of the fieldwork carried out and to support the presented research.

In your conclusions, reflect on what you have learned, both about the topic of air pollution and its impacts, and about teamwork, research, and communication skills. Also, consider the proposed solutions and discuss the feasibility and possible impacts of their implementations.
