Theoretical Introduction
The study of food chains and webs is a fundamental theme for understanding Ecology, a discipline that seeks to understand how living beings interact with each other and with the environment. Thus, the food chain represents the different levels of feeding in nature, showing who feeds on whom. It consists of a linear sequence in which an organism feeds on the next, transferring energy and nutrients.
Each level of the food chain is called a link, and this represents a group of organisms whose feeding behavior is similar. The first link is made up of producers, followed by consumers, and finally, we have decomposers.
The food web, in turn, is the interconnection of several food chains. It offers a more realistic representation of the food relationships that exist in an ecosystem, showing that an organism can occupy different trophic levels depending on its diet.
Contextualization of the Theme
Understanding food chains and webs is essential for raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity. Each living being has a distinct role in the food web, and its preservation is crucial for the balance of ecosystems.
Human interference, through actions such as pollution and deforestation, can generate imbalances in food webs and chains. Such imbalances can cause species extinction, alterations in the availability of natural resources, and therefore directly impact human life.

Activity Title:
Building and Analyzing a Food Web
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to provide the construction and analysis of a food web from an ecosystem chosen by the students, identifying the food links and the interaction between them. In addition, the project will allow a discussion on the consequences of the imbalance of a food web due to human action.
Detailed Project Description
Students will divide into groups of 3 to 5 people and choose an ecosystem for analysis. They should research the organisms present in this ecosystem, their feeding behavior, interactions, and build a representative food web.
After constructing the food web, each group must select a species from their ecosystem and discuss the impact on the web if it were to become extinct. Each group should research human actions that could lead to the extinction of this species.

- Colored pencils or markers
- Scissors
- Glue
- Internet for research
Detailed Activity Steps
- Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Each group must choose an ecosystem for study.
- With the chosen ecosystem, students should research which organisms are part of it and what the feeding relationship between them is.
- Based on the research, students should elaborate a food web, representing the different links and the energy transferred between them.
- Each group must choose a species from the food web and discuss what would happen if it were to become extinct.
- Students should research human actions that could lead to the extinction of this species.
- Finally, students should prepare a presentation for the class, explaining their food web and the consequences of the extinction of the chosen species.
- Each group must produce a written report, following the suggested format: introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography.
Project Deliverables
- Food Web: Students must deliver the physical representation of the food web of the chosen ecosystem. This web should be explained during a presentation to the class.
- Presentation: A presentation to the class where they must explain the elaborated food web and discuss what would happen if the species they chose were to become extinct.
- Written Report: Each group must prepare a detailed report on the project, according to the established format. In the introduction, students must contextualize the theme, talk about its importance and real-world application, as well as the project's objective. In the development, they must explain the theory used, describe the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and analyze the results obtained. The conclusion should summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project. The bibliography used should also be indicated.
The report is the main means for teachers to assess students' understanding of the concepts and their ability to apply them in practice. Therefore, it is extremely important that each group dedicates the necessary time for its elaboration.
