Contextualization

Life, in its various forms, is incredibly complex and diverse. One of the most fascinating topics of these varied life forms is protozoa and algae, two types of organisms that are incredibly influential in our world, although they are almost never noticed by the vast majority of people.

Protozoa are unicellular and extremely adaptable organisms, found in the most varied habitats, from soil to our own bodies, where they can cause various diseases. Algae, on the other hand, are not only responsible for a significant part of our planet's oxygen production, but also constitute the basis of the food chain in many aquatic ecosystems.

Both organisms are representatives of the Protista kingdom and contribute to the maintenance or imbalance of ecosystems, as well as having applications in biotechnology, medicine, food, among others.

Their relevance is indisputable, but only by delving into their details can we truly understand the impact that these small beings have on our world.

Introduction

The study of protozoa and algae goes beyond merely looking through the microscope. It is a journey into the depths of the biological world, allowing us to see life in its most basic form and understand how these simple beings can have a great impact on the world around us.

Protozoa, for example, are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to diseases. Agents of serious diseases such as malaria, Chagas disease, amoebiasis, among others, are protozoa. Understanding their biology, their modus operandi, becomes essential for the prevention and treatment of these ailments.

Algae, although less notorious in their direct impact on human health, play essential roles in many aquatic ecosystems, being responsible for most of the photosynthesis that occurs in the oceans and, therefore, for most of the oxygen we breathe. Additionally, they are also applied in the food, pharmaceutical industry, and biofuel production.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Unraveling Protozoa and Algae - From Microscopes to Infographics."

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the characteristics, diversity, and importance of protozoa and algae. Additionally, it also aims to stimulate research skills, teamwork, critical analysis, and expression of information in the form of infographics.

Detailed Project Description:

In this project, students will be grouped into teams of 3 to 5 members. Each team will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and presenting detailed information in the form of an infographic on the following topics:

  1. General characteristics of protozoa and algae.
  2. Classification and diversity of protozoa and algae.
  3. Eco-environmental importance and for human health (including diseases caused by protozoa).
  4. Applications of protozoa and algae in industry and science.

The total duration of the project should be approximately one month, with each student dedicating five to ten hours to its execution.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research.
  • Microscopes for observing protozoa and algae (if possible).
  • Books and scientific articles for research.
  • Graphic design / infographic creation software (there are many free online tools, such as Canva, Piktochart, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Group Formation: Organize students into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group should be responsible for the four topics mentioned above.

  2. Theoretical Research: Each group should start researching the assigned topics, using the suggested bibliography and other reliable sources. They should understand the general characteristics, classification, diversity, importance, and applications of protozoa and algae. This stage should last about two weeks.

  3. Practical Observation: If possible, each group should have the opportunity to observe samples of protozoa and algae under a microscope. This step will allow students to firsthand see the complexity and diversity of these microorganisms.

  4. Infographic Creation: After theoretical research and practical observation, groups should start working on the infographic. The focus should be on presenting information clearly, concisely, and visually appealing.

  5. Presentation: Each group should present their infographic to the class, explaining each point and answering any questions that may arise.

Finally, each group should produce a detailed report, which includes:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
  • Development: Explanation of the theory behind the project's central themes, detailed explanation of the activities, indication of the methodology used, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
  • Conclusions: Review of the main points, explanation of the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project.
  • Bibliography: Indication of the sources they relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This document should be delivered along with the finalized infographic as the final product of this project. The report should complement the infographic, providing a detailed description of the work done, from information collection to group discussions and conclusions.
