Introduction
Excretion is a biological process carried out by all organisms to eliminate toxic substances, metabolic wastes, and excess salts and water. It is essential for maintaining the body's homeostatic balance, allowing cells to function in a stable internal environment. However, not all organisms excrete in the same way. Different animals excrete in different ways, varying in their method and efficiency. Studying these different methods of excretion and their adaptations is fundamental to understanding the survival and evolution of life on Earth.
Among the excretion types, ammonotelism, ureotelism, and uricotelism stand out. Ammonotelism is characterized by the elimination of ammonia, a highly toxic and water-soluble substance, and is common in aquatic animals such as fish. Ureotelism, carried out by mammals, including humans, excretes urea, a less toxic and less water-soluble substance, allowing for water conservation. Finally, uricotelism is the hallmark of animals that excrete uric acid, a nearly water-insoluble substance, allowing for the greatest possible water conservation, as is the case with birds and reptiles.
Studying the different types of excretion, besides being fascinating, is useful for understanding how different organisms have adapted to their specific environments over time. For humans, this understanding is crucial in medicine, as it helps us understand diseases related to the excretory system and develop effective treatments.
As a resource for deepening knowledge and carrying out this project, it is suggested to use the book "Biology - single volume" by Amabis and Martho, available in the school library. In addition, the Youtube channel "Ciência Todo Dia" also has several explanatory videos on the subject, including "What happens if you hold your pee?" and "How does the urinary system work?" There are also reliable websites such as "Mundo Educação" that offer great articles on the subject.
Practical Activity - "Unveiling Excretion Types: A Journey through the Animal Kingdom"
Project Objective:
Carry out detailed research and produce an educational video on the different types of excretion in animals, highlighting the differences between ammonotelism, ureotelism, and uricotelism and the animals that carry out each of these processes.
Detailed project description:
Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, you will carry out in-depth research on the proposed topic and record your findings in a script for the production of a video. The video must be well-founded, creative, and engaging, aiming to present the theme in a playful and attractive way, lasting between 10 to 15 minutes. In addition, you will have to prepare a detailed report on the research and production of the video.
Required materials:
- Biology books, preferably "Biology - single volume" by Amabis and Martho.
- Internet access for research on reliable websites and watching educational videos.
- Video recording equipment (it can be a cell phone with good resolution).
- Video editing software or app.
- Paper and pen for drafting and writing the script.
Detailed step-by-step for carrying out the activity:
-
Research: Start by doing detailed research on the different types of excretion in the animal kingdom, focusing on how and why they are different. Gather enough information to fully understand the topic.
-
Discussion: Discuss the information gathered in a group. This is the stage where you will share and debate ideas, collaborating to build knowledge.
-
Script: Write a detailed script for the video. Both the information that will be presented and the way it will be presented must be considered.
-
Recording: With the script in hand, start recording the video. Remember, this is an educational video, but it should also be interesting and engaging.
-
Editing: After recording all the scenes, the video needs to be edited to become cohesive and fluid.
-
Report: In parallel with the production of the video, you will prepare a report on the entire process, with emphasis on the research carried out, methodology used, video production, and results obtained.
Project Deliverables:
-
Video: The final result will be a creative and engaging 10 to 15-minute informative video on the different types of excretion in the animal kingdom. The evaluation will be based on the accuracy of the information, creativity, clarity in the presentation, and technical quality.
-
Report: Accompanying the video, the group must submit a detailed report, of at least 5 pages, containing:
- Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance, and application in the real world, and the objective of this project.
- Development: Theory behind the excretion types, detailed explanation of the video production, the research methodology used, and the results obtained.
- Conclusion: Summary of the main points, the lessons learned, and the conclusions about the project.
- Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for the research and preparation of the project.
You will have one month to complete the project. We hope that this activity helps you to explore the theme in more depth, while developing important skills such as research, communication, teamwork, time management, and creativity.
