Contextualization

Did you know that acidity is present in many things around us? In the orange juice you drink for breakfast, in soft drinks, in the stomach, and even in the rain! But what makes something acidic? How can we differentiate an acid from other compounds? And what are the properties of an acid?

Introduction

Acids are substances that have a sour taste and the ability to release hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water. This concept is known as the Arrhenius theory, formulated by the chemist Svante Arrhenius. In addition, acids have the power to corrode metals, cause burns, produce exothermic reactions when they react with water, and change the color of certain pH indicators.

However, the concept of acid is not limited to that. Another more comprehensive theory, the Brønsted-Lowry theory, conceptualizes an acid as a proton donor and a base as a proton acceptor. There is also the Lewis theory, which further expands the definition of acids and bases. According to Lewis, an acid is an electron pair acceptor and a base is an electron pair donor.

Acids can be classified in various ways, such as strong and weak acids, monoprotic and polyprotic acids, organic and inorganic acids, among others. Each of these classes of acids has specific properties and behaviors.

Importance of Acids

Acids play a fundamental role in various aspects of our lives and nature. In industry, acids are used in the manufacture of plastics, paints, explosives, fertilizers, and many other products. In the human body, acids help in food digestion and defense against bacteria.

Furthermore, the study of acids is essential to understand various natural and environmental phenomena, such as acid rain and ocean acidification.

On the other hand, improper handling of acids can lead to serious accidents, such as burns, inhalation of toxic gases, and environmental contamination. Therefore, it is important to understand the properties of acids and how to handle them safely.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Acids in our Daily Life"

Project Objective:

The general objective of this project is to explore the presence and impact of acids in our daily lives. More specifically, it is expected that students will be able to:

  • Identify common acids in household products, such as vinegar and lemon juice;
  • Recognize the acidic properties of these products by conducting neutralization experiments;
  • Understand the concept of pH and its role in daily life;
  • Effectively communicate their processes and findings through a detailed report.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will conduct a series of simple experiments to explore the presence of acids in common household products. Firstly, they will identify possible acids and discuss their properties as a group. Next, they will perform neutralization experiments with a safety base (sodium bicarbonate) and observe the results. The entire process, from identifying the acids, conducting the experiments, observing the results, to group discussions, must be thoroughly documented for the preparation of the final report.

Required Materials:

  • Everyday products containing acids (e.g., vinegar, lemon juice, soda)
  • Sodium bicarbonate (base for neutralization)
  • Water
  • Plastic cups
  • Spoons
  • Safety masks and gloves

Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution:

  1. Discuss as a group the everyday products that may contain acids. Record your hypotheses.

  2. For each identified product, perform the following experiment:

    • Pour a small amount of the product into a cup.
    • Add a spoonful of sodium bicarbonate.
    • Observe and discuss what happened.
  3. Document each step of the experiment, including your hypotheses, observations, and conclusions.

  4. After conducting the experiments, students should gather to discuss their findings.

  5. Finally, each group should write a detailed report on their findings, as described in the "Project Deliverables" section below.

Project Deliverables:

Each group must submit a final report, structured as follows:

Introduction: In this section, students should contextualize the activity, describing the concept of acids, the importance of this concept in daily life, and the general objective of this project.

Development: Here, students should detail the execution of the activity, which everyday products were used, what results were observed, and the conclusions drawn. This section should be detailed so that anyone reading it can understand the entire process carried out.

Conclusions: In this part, students should summarize their main findings, providing insights into the role of acids in our daily lives. They should also mention the lessons learned during the project.

References: Finally, in this section, students should indicate the sources of information used for the project execution and for the preparation of the report.

Remember, the objective of this project is not only to learn about acids, but also to develop skills in teamwork, effective communication, time management, among other important skills. Therefore, pay attention to these aspects during the project execution and the preparation of the final report.
