Background

A phase diagram is a graph that shows the pressure and temperature conditions at which different phases of a substance can coexist in equilibrium. These diagrams are essential for understanding how different substances behave under different conditions, allowing us to predict phase changes such as freezing, melting, and vaporization.

To understand phase diagrams, we first need to understand the concept of phases of matter. In chemistry, a phase is a homogeneous region of matter that has uniform physical and chemical characteristics. The three most common phases are solid, liquid, and gas. However, each substance can exist in certain phases depending on the temperature and pressure conditions to which it is subjected.

Phase diagrams allow us to predict the behaviour of a substance at any given pressure and temperature. Through them, we can determine which phase will be predominant and if there will be coexistence of phases. In addition, they can indicate whether the substance has anomalous behaviour, such as water, where the solid phase (ice) floats on the liquid phase.

Phase diagrams have wide application in the real world. They are used, for example, in industry to control the crystallization of chemical substances, in the design of refrigerators and air conditioners, in astrophysics to model the internal structure of stars and even in molecular gastronomy.

Hands-on Activity: "Building Your Own Phase Diagram"

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to create a hands-on experiment to demonstrate the theoretical concepts of phase diagrams, while developing research, teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, must select a substance and create a phase diagram for that substance, combining knowledge of Chemistry and Physics, and using the knowledge acquired in the research carried out.

Required Materials

  • Substance chosen (that can be safely handled in a school environment)
  • Thermostat or equipment that allows temperature control
  • Pressure gauge
  • Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves, lab coat)
  • Camera to record the experiment
  • Graph paper or graphing software

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Substance Selection: Students should choose a substance for which they will construct the phase diagram. It is recommended to select a substance that exhibits standard phase behaviour, such as paraffin or table salt.

  2. Research on the Substance: Each group should conduct a detailed research on the chosen substance, identifying its melting point, boiling point, and any anomalies in the substance's phase behaviour. In addition, they should also research the risks associated with handling the substance, and how safety procedures should be carried out.

  3. Experimentation: Students should gradually control the temperature of the chosen substance, noting the pressure as the substance changes phase.

  4. Experiment Recording: The entire experimental process should be recorded, either through photographs, video recordings or simply through detailed notes.

  5. Phase Diagram Construction: With the data collected in the experiment, students should plot the diagram, plotting pressure against temperature. They can choose to use graph paper or some graphing software.

  6. Diagram Analysis: With the diagram finalized, students should analyse the result, comparing the observed behaviour with the researched literature and identifying possible anomalies.

Project Deliverables

In addition to the constructed phase diagram, groups must submit a detailed project report. This report should follow the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusions and References.

  • Introduction: In this section, students should contextualise the topic, explain the relevance of phase diagrams, the chosen substance and the objective of the experiment.

  • Development: This section should include the theory on the phase diagram, a detailed explanation of the experiment, discussion of the results obtained and comparison of these with the researched literature. Also show the group's work methodology and how they managed their time.

  • Conclusions: Finally, the main points of the work should be revisited, indicating the lessons learned and the importance of the experiment for understanding phase diagrams.

  • References: In this section, list all sources of information consulted during the project: books, websites, videos and others.

Remember, constructing the report is an essential part of the project, as it is through it that students will demonstrate not only the knowledge acquired, but also the practical application of this knowledge, in addition to communication, cooperation and time management skills.

This project requires dedication and collaboration from all members of the group and will take more than twelve hours to complete, so get organized and have fun learning!
