Introduction

Matter is the central theme of chemistry and is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space. This statement, so simple at first glance, carries with it immense complexity and a range of possibilities for study and understanding. There are many aspects of matter that are studied; in this project we will focus on its general properties.

Properties, in science, are characteristics that physically and/or chemically describe a type of matter. The general properties of matter refer to the attributes that all forms of matter share, such as impenetrability (the impossibility of two bodies occupying the same place in space), compressibility, extension, inertia, divisibility, and porosity.

But how do these properties apply to the world around us? How do they impact our daily lives? Chemistry, and specifically the study of the properties of matter, is at work in almost every aspect of everyday life. From the way food is prepared, to how medicines are formulated, to how materials are produced, to the functioning of devices like cell phones and computers.

Working on this project will help you better understand these concepts and see examples of them in action. The knowledge gained here will be fundamental to understanding later concepts in the discipline. To aid in your learning journey, I suggest reading the book "Chemistry for Dummies", which approaches chemistry principles in an accessible and fun way. For those who prefer digital resources, I recommend the website Chemistry in Action (www.quimicaemacao.com.br), which has video lessons and explanatory texts on a wide range of chemistry topics.

Hands-on Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring General Properties of Matter"

Project Objective:

The purpose of this project is to give you, the students, an opportunity to explore and understand the general properties of matter in a hands-on way. Each group of 3-5 members will conduct an activity illustrating one or more general properties of matter, prepare a demonstration experiment, and write a report presenting their findings.

Detailed Project Description:

In this project, you will:

  1. Choose a general property of matter to explore.
  2. Research and understand the chosen property.
  3. Design an experiment that demonstrates the property.
  4. Conduct the experiment, document the procedure and results.
  5. Analyze the results and prepare a report of your findings.

Materials Required:

The materials may vary depending on the experiment to be carried out. Each group must identify, through research, what will be needed and ensure that the materials are accessible and safe to use.

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for Carrying Out the Activity:

Step 1: Choosing the Property As a group, choose a general property of matter to study. Remember, the general properties of matter include impenetrability, compressibility, extension, inertia, divisibility, and porosity.

Step 2: Research Gather information about your chosen property and how it is observed in the world around us. You should seek to understand not only the definition of the property but also its implications and practical applications.

Step 3: Experiment Planning Plan an experiment that will allow you to visualize the chosen property. Make sure that the experiment is safe, feasible, and that the necessary materials are readily available.

Step 4: Experiment Execution Carry out the experiment as planned, documenting each step of the process. You may use photos, videos, or illustrations to help document the process. Be sure to note any observations and results.

  2. Development: Describe the theory behind the chosen property, explain the experiment in detail, indicate the methodology used and, finally, present and discuss the results obtained.
  3. Conclusions: Conclude the work by reviewing the main points, explaining the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project.
  4. Bibliography: List the sources you used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, among others.

This report will not only allow group members to articulate and consolidate their learning, but will also allow other students to learn from their research and experimentation.
