Contextualization

Matter is everything that occupies space and has mass. Everything around us is matter, including ourselves! Matter can be studied at different levels, focusing on its general properties (those that are common to all matter) or its specific properties (those that are unique to each type of matter). The physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties of matter are analyzed to understand its characteristics and behaviors under certain conditions.

Physical properties of matter refer to the characteristics that can be observed or measured without altering the composition of matter. This includes color, hardness, density, melting and boiling points, among others. Chemical properties, on the other hand, describe how matter reacts with other materials, that is, its ability to transform into another substance. Examples include reactivity with other substances and flammability. Finally, organoleptic properties are those that can be perceived by our senses, such as taste, odor, color, texture, and sound.

The application of these concepts is abundant in our daily lives. From choosing ingredients for a meal to producing medications and creating new materials with specific properties for emerging technologies. The way matter behaves determines how and where it can be applied. Physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties are therefore vital for innovation and progress in various fields of study and industries.

Studying these properties allows for the prediction and understanding of how matter will behave in different situations, essential for numerous areas such as Engineering, Medicine, the Food Industry, and even Art. The knowledge acquired here will have practical applications far beyond the classroom walls!

Practical Activity - 'Exploring the Properties of Matter'

Objective:

Apply knowledge about the physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties of matter to identify and characterize different substances and materials.

Project Description:

In groups of 3 to 5 students, you will select three different materials for analysis and investigation. These can be everyday objects, food ingredients, laboratory materials, among others. The project will involve the investigation and documentation of the physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties of these materials, conducting experiments to explore these properties, and preparing a detailed report of the results.

Necessary Materials:

  • Three different materials for analysis
  • Safety equipment such as gloves and goggles
  • Laboratory equipment such as beakers, graduated cylinders, thermometers, scales, ring stands, among others (depending on the experiments conducted)
  • Research resources: books, internet access, etc.

Step by Step:

  1. Material Selection: Each group must choose three different materials for analysis. These can be food ingredients, clothing pieces, objects made of wood, metal, plastic, among other options. Be creative and try to select materials that may have distinct properties.

  2. Initial Research: Research the physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties of the selected material. What are the characteristics that the material should present? Is there any chemical reaction that the material should undergo?

  3. Experimentation: Conduct experiments to test the properties investigated in the initial research. This may include density tests, dissolution rates in water, heat or cold resistance, chemical reactions, etc. Always remember to use appropriate safety equipment during experimentation.

  4. Documentation: Document all your observations, experiment results, conclusions, and processes in a report. This document will be the final presentation of your project.

  5. Preparation of the Final Report: Use all the collected information to prepare a detailed report. The report should follow the following format:

    • Introduction: Present the selected materials, contextualize the theme, and explain the project's objective.
    • Development: Explain in detail the theory behind the physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties. Describe the experiments conducted, the methodology used, and the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Discuss the results, draw conclusions about the materials' properties, and summarize the main points of the project.
    • Bibliography: List all resources (books, websites, videos, etc.) used in the project's development.

Project Delivery:

  • The complete report must be submitted within one month from the project's start date.
  • Each group member must contribute to all parts of the project, including research, experimentation, and report writing.
  • The report should be written in a clear and concise manner, highlighting the acquired knowledge, technical skills, socioemotional skills developed, and the practical application of the studied theme.
