Chemistry is a fascinating science that unveils the mysteries of matter, its properties, and transformations. We will begin our journey in this universe by studying the initial aspects of matter, the concepts of body and object, and understanding its main characteristics and properties.

When we think of matter, we usually associate this term with tangible elements around us, but matter is a much broader and intriguing concept. It is everything that has mass and occupies space, including solids, liquids, gases, and even particles invisible to the naked eye.

Matter is formed by atoms, which group together in specific ways to form different molecules. This determines the physical and chemical properties of matter. Understanding these fundamentals is an essential key to decipher the complex processes and phenomena that occur in our world.

In everyday life, we are constantly interacting with matter. When we cook, we are transforming matter, altering its properties through heat. When we breathe, we are exchanging gases (also matter) with the environment. The very screen you are reading this text on is made of matter!

Understanding the initial aspects of matter is fundamental to comprehend the world around us and how we interact with it. Moreover, it is the foundation for many professions and fields of study, such as medicine, engineering, biology, physics, among others.

Activity Title: Exploring the Properties of Matter: A Journey through Chemistry

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to provide students with a practical experience to explore the initial aspects of matter. Through a simple experiment, students will be able to observe the differences in the physical properties of different types of matter.

Detailed Project Description:

In groups of 3 to 5 students, each group will conduct an experiment to observe and understand the physical properties of matter, such as density, state, and color. In the experiment, students will manipulate three different types of liquids: water, cooking oil, and alcohol. All participants will be responsible for documenting their observations and conclusions.

Required Materials:

  1. Three transparent containers
  2. Water
  3. Cooking oil
  4. Alcohol
  5. Food coloring of different colors
  6. Spoon
  7. Pens and paper for notes

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Each group should fill one of the containers with water halfway. Add a few drops of food coloring of one color.

  2. In another container, fill halfway with cooking oil. Add a few drops of food coloring of another color.

  3. In the last container, fill halfway with alcohol. Add a few drops of food coloring of a distinct color.

  4. Now, students should carefully observe the characteristics of these liquids in terms of color, density, and state.

  5. Next, each group should mix the three liquids carefully in a single container. Here, students should observe the interactions between the liquids and how they separate based on their densities.

  6. Students should document all their observations in real-time, writing down their findings and taking photographs if necessary.

  7. After the experiment, students should clean and organize the experiment area.

Students will have one week to complete the activity. All group members must participate and contribute to the experience.

Project Delivery:

At the end of the project, each group must prepare a detailed report containing four main parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.

In the Introduction, the group should contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

In the Development, the group should explain in detail the activity carried out, present the methodology used, and discuss the results obtained. The group should also explain the theoretical concepts involved in the activity and how these applied in practice.

In the Conclusion, students should summarize the main points of the work, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.

In the Bibliography, students should indicate the sources they relied on to conduct the experiment and write the report, including books, websites, videos, etc.

Thus, upon completing the practical activity and writing the report, students will have the opportunity to explore a key concept of chemistry while also developing important skills such as communication, teamwork, and time management.
