Chemistry is a fascinating science, capable of explaining everything from the simplest everyday phenomena to the most complex industrial processes. Its study involves understanding matter, its properties, behaviors, and transformations. The theme of this project, 'Matter - General Properties,' is fundamental for the understanding of many other areas of Chemistry, such as the study of the physical states of matter, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, among others.

Matter is everything that occupies space and has mass. Starting from this basic definition, let's explore the general properties of matter, which include: extension, impenetrability, compressibility, divisibility, mass, and inertia. In this journey, we will understand what each of these properties means and how they impact matter and its transformations.

In our current scenario of great technological and scientific advancement, understanding how matter behaves, its characteristics, and properties is essential. The properties of matter allow us to understand and predict how materials will react under different conditions, enabling us to create more efficient technologies, more resistant materials, and safer substances.

Not only in technology but also in our daily lives, the properties of matter are fundamental. Whether in planning a diet, choosing materials for building a house, or creating a new medication, understanding the properties of matter is crucial.

Atividade Prática: 'Exploring the Properties of Matter'

Activity Title:

'Exploring the Properties of Matter'

Project Objective:

To understand and demonstrate in practice the general properties of matter - extension, impenetrability, compressibility, divisibility, mass, and inertia - through the realization of experiments and group discussions.

Detailed Project Description:

This project should be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 members and has an estimated duration of over twelve hours per participating student. It is divided into two main parts: the realization of practical experiments and the preparation of a written report.

Practical Part:

Each group must carry out 7 practical experiments, each related to one of the studied properties of matter. The experiments are:

  1. Extension: Observe and document the behavior of different liquids in different containers
  2. Impenetrability: Try to fit two solid objects into each other
  3. Compressibility: Compare how different gases behave when pressurized
  4. Divisibility: Divide a substance into smaller parts and observe if its chemical nature changes
  5. Mass: Weigh different objects and discuss how this relates to the amount of matter
  6. Inertia: Conduct experiments with objects in motion and at rest to observe this property of matter
  7. Experiment combining properties: Propose and carry out an experiment that demonstrates at least two properties of matter simultaneously.

Written Part:

After the practical part, each group must prepare a detailed report, divided into four main sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

Required Materials:

  1. Various objects of different sizes, shapes, and materials
  2. Various liquids (water, oil, alcohol, etc.)
  3. Scale
  4. Various gases in pressurizable containers
  5. Camera to document experiments

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

  1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 members.
  2. Each group chooses and performs the proposed experiments for each property of matter.
  3. Document all experiments with photos and notes.
  4. Prepare a detailed report that includes the sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.
  5. Present the report and discuss the results with the entire class.

Project Deliverables:

Each group must deliver the following:

  1. Documentation of experiments: Photos, notes, observations, and conclusions of each of the 7 experiments carried out.
  2. Final report: Must be written following the structure of 4 sections (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography). In the development, the report must explain the experiments in detail, indicate the methodology used, present and discuss the results obtained. In the conclusion, students must summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project. The bibliography should indicate all sources used.

This project will allow students to deeply and practically understand the general properties of matter and also develop important socio-emotional skills for teamwork, such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, proactivity, among others.
