Context

In our lives, we are constantly surrounded by chemical reactions. From boiling an egg to the rusting of a metal clip, from leaves changing color in autumn to the digestion of food in our stomachs - all of these are examples of chemical reactions. At the heart of each of these reactions lies a fundamental idea of chemistry: the law of conservation of mass. This law states that the total amount of mass in a chemical reaction remains constant, meaning the total mass of the reactants (substances that react) is equal to the total mass of the products (substances produced).

Now, 'reaction balancing' is the method we use to ensure that the law of conservation of mass is respected in a chemical reaction. When a chemical reaction is represented by a chemical equation, balancing that equation ensures that the number of atoms for each element is conserved, that is, the number of atoms for each element is the same on both sides of the equation.

Importance

The ability to balance reactions is extremely important not only for chemists but for a variety of professionals in different fields. Chemical engineers, for example, need to be able to balance reactions to design processes that produce desired chemical compounds. Pharmacists use reaction balancing to calculate the correct amount of medication to be administered to patients. In the environmental field, reaction balancing is an essential tool to understand how pollutants interact with the environment and help create solutions to reduce pollution.

In this project, we will have the opportunity not only to learn how to balance chemical reactions but also to explore their influence and relevance in our world.

Practical Activity

Title: Making Chemistry Fair - Equilibrium through Reaction Balancing

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a practical and applied understanding of the concept of balancing chemical reactions. Additionally, it is intended that students develop teamwork, time management, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Project Description

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, each group will receive a set of chemical reactions (unbalanced) related to a real-world scenario - such as the manufacturing of a specific medication, the production of an industrial chemical compound, or the neutralization of a spill of toxic chemical material.

Students will be tasked with balancing the provided chemical reactions and then using their understanding of reaction balancing to develop a viable strategy to deal with the specific scenario assigned to them.

Required Materials

  • List of unbalanced chemical reactions related to each group's scenario (provided by the teacher).
  • Research resources (books, internet).

Step by Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Distribute the scenarios and the corresponding unbalanced chemical reactions to each group.
  3. Each group should research and understand each chemical reaction, balance it, and make the necessary notes.
  4. Using the balanced reactions and the research conducted, students must develop a strategy for the assigned scenario.
  5. Each group will prepare a final report (described below) and a 15-20 minute presentation explaining their findings and strategy.

Project Deliverables

The final product of the project will be the submission of a written report and an oral presentation.

  1. Report: The report should contain the Introduction, where the scenario, the relevance of the chemical reactions involved, and the role of reaction balancing in such scenarios are contextualized. The Development should explain the theory of reaction balancing, the details of each chemical reaction involved, the balancing process, and the strategy developed for the scenario. The Conclusions should summarize the group's learning, revisiting the main points and conclusions drawn from the project. Do not forget to include the Bibliography used as a research source.

  2. Oral Presentation: Each group must prepare a 15-20 minute presentation for the class, explaining the entire process of their project, from balancing the chemical reactions to developing the strategy for their scenario. Each group member should participate in the presentation, which will help develop communication and teamwork skills.

It is important to remember that the project's emphasis is both on learning and understanding reaction balancing and on teamwork and socio-emotional skills associated with this type of project.
