Context

Introduction

The Periodic Table is a cutting-edge tool used to organize chemical elements according to their properties and characteristics. It was created by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 and has since become an iconic symbol of Chemistry. In our study, we will focus specifically on metals, which constitute the majority of chemical elements found in the Periodic Table.

Metals are elements that exhibit very particular characteristics, such as metallic luster, ability to conduct heat and electricity, malleability, and ductility. They are mostly located on the left and center of the Periodic Table. Furthermore, due to their properties, they have been fundamental for human progress, from ancient times to modern days, in various industrial sectors.

Within metals, we have specific groups, such as the alkali metals, which are located in the first group of the Periodic Table. These elements have such high chemical reactivity that they are not found in nature in their pure state, but only in compounds. They also have a range of practical applications, from soap production to energy generation in nuclear reactors.

Importance and Applications

Understanding the properties of metals and their location in the Periodic Table is essential, not only for learning chemistry but also for understanding the world around us. Most of the materials we use in our daily lives, such as automobiles, buildings, kitchen utensils, and electronics, are made of metals or their compounds.

Moreover, metals play a crucial role in many industrial processes, such as electrolysis, which uses the metals' ability to conduct electricity to produce chemicals, and catalysis, where metals act as catalysts to accelerate chemical reactions without being consumed in the process.

Understanding these concepts will allow us to make connections between the principles of chemistry and everyday practices, as well as prepare us to explore more advanced applications of metals in areas such as nanotechnology, medicine, and sustainable energy.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Metal Mania - Building the Metallic Periodic Table

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to deepen students' understanding of the location of metals in the periodic table, as well as their characteristics and properties. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people to research, design, and present a panel of the periodic table focused on metals.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of students will be responsible for creating a panel of a specific sector of the Periodic Table containing only metals. The sectors can be divided according to the blocks or groups of the periodic table, allowing all groups to work with a variety of metals.

The cells of each element must contain information about the name, atomic number, symbol, atomic mass, and electronic distribution of each metal. In addition, students must include information about the main properties and applications of each of the chosen metals.

In the end, the groups will present their findings to the class, explaining why the chosen metals are where they are on the table and what their most important properties and applications are.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or large cardstock.
  • Colored pens, markers, and/or colored pencils.
  • Ruler and square.
  • Computers with internet access for research.
  • Reference books.

Activity Steps

  1. Students will form groups of 3 to 5 members.
  2. Each group will receive a part of the Periodic Table to work on.
  3. The groups will research the metals that make up their part of the periodic table, paying particular attention to their location on the table, their chemical and physical properties, and their main applications.
  4. After the research, the groups will draw on a cardboard or large cardstock their version of the periodic table, representing only the metals and including the information collected in the research.
  5. Each group will prepare an oral presentation, explaining the characteristics of the metals they chose and their implications.
  6. On the last day of the week, each group will present their panel and explain the information contained in it to the class.

Project Deliverables and Final Document

After completing the panel and the presentation, the groups must prepare a report describing the project implementation process. The report should be organized as follows:

  1. Introduction: Students should write about why the study of metals is important, both for chemistry and for the world around us. The role of metals in the periodic table and in our daily lives should be contextualized, explaining the project's objective.

  2. Development: In this section, students should detail the project's stages, from the research phase to the creation of the panel and the presentation. The theory behind the location of metals in the periodic table and the properties of the metals worked on should be explained. Additionally, they should indicate the methodology used in the research and construction of the models and present the main results achieved.

  3. Conclusions: Students should revisit the main points of the project, summarizing what they learned about metals in the periodic table, how this helped expand their knowledge of chemistry, and how the project stimulated collaboration and coordination within the group.

  4. Bibliography: Students should list all sources used to carry out the project: books, websites, videos, etc.

The final project delivery will be the complete panel, assembled with all parts produced by the groups, along with the report described above.
