Chemistry is a science that is constantly interacting with our daily lives, and understanding its basic principles is essential to comprehend the world around us. One of the fundamental topics in chemistry is the definition and differentiation between simple and compound substances. Learning about these concepts is crucial as they form the basis for the study of various other topics in chemistry.

Simple substances are those composed of a single type of atom, while compound substances are formed by two or more types of bonded atoms. These concepts help us understand the nature of matter and how different chemical elements combine to form compounds with distinct chemical properties.

The existence of allotropes is another key topic for understanding chemistry. Allotropes are different forms of the same element in distinct physical states, such as oxygen (O2) and ozone (O3), both allotropes of oxygen.

In the real world, the application of these concepts is vast. Compound substances are the basis for creating new materials and medicines. Understanding the existence of allotropes helps to comprehend natural phenomena, such as the formation of the ozone layer. Furthermore, our entire chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industry is based on this understanding of how simple substances can combine to form compounds.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Substances in Action: Simple and Compound'

Activity Objective:

This project aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and understand the concepts of simple and compound substances, as well as the existence of allotropes, through conducting experiments in the laboratory and detailed research on these substances. Consequently, students will have the chance to enhance teamwork, communication, time management, and demonstrate their learning through the preparation of a detailed report.

Detailed Activity Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will have to research, conduct experiments, and create a detailed report on a simple substance and a compound substance of their choice, also exploring the concepts of allotropes, if applicable.

It will also be necessary to present the historical context, discovery, uses, and real-world applications of the chosen substances. The multidisciplinary work is present in the process, requiring integration between chemistry and history, for example.

Required Materials:

  • Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves, lab coat)
  • Laboratory materials (test tubes, beakers, pipettes)
  • Chemical substances for experimentation
  • Access to research resources (books, internet)
  • Presentation materials (white paper, pens, computer)

Step-by-Step Activity Execution:

  1. Research: The group must research the chosen simple and compound substances, focusing on their properties, uses, history, and, if applicable, their allotropes.

  2. Experiment Planning: Based on the research, the group must design one or more experiments to explore the properties of the chosen substances.

  3. Experiment Execution: Under the supervision of the teacher, students must carry out the planned experiments in the laboratory environment.

  4. Results Recording: All results must be carefully recorded for inclusion in the report.

  5. Report Writing: The group must then write a detailed report, covering all aspects of their study, experiments, and findings.

Project Submission:

At the end of the project, groups must submit the written report, which should include the following sections:

  1. Introduction: Brief description of the chosen substances and justification for the choice. Contextualization of the substance in history and in current society.

  2. Development: Here, the group must detail the theory behind simple and compound substances, describe in detail the experiments conducted, the methodology used, and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Recap of the main points, observations on the learning achieved, and reflections on the project.

  4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources used in the project.

The project is estimated to last approximately 12 hours per student, including research time, experiment planning, laboratory practice, results analysis, and report writing.
