On the other hand, phases in a mixture refer to portions that exhibit uniform physical and chemical characteristics. Taking the mixture of water and sand as an example again, in this system, we have two distinct phases. The liquid phase, which is water, and the solid phase, which is sand.

The interface between learning the concepts of components and phases and their application in everyday life is through the study of mixtures. Mixtures are present in our daily lives. For example, the foods we consume, the medicines we take, the air we breathe are all mixtures.

The groups will select three different types of foods that undergo mixing processes during their preparation (for example, a cake, a natural juice, and a tomato sauce). For each food, the group must:

  • Identify the components of the mixture (before and after preparation).
  • Identify the phases of the mixture (before and after preparation).
  • Explain how the transformations of the components and phases occur during the food preparation.
  • Relate the observed chemical processes to concepts studied in Biology.

  2. Each group must choose three types of foods that undergo mixing processes during their preparation.

  4. The groups should then prepare the selected foods, making detailed observations and records about the components and phases present before and after preparation.
  5. After the practical activity is completed, the groups should analyze the results, correlating them with the theoretical concepts.

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. Written Report: The report must contain the following items:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance, real-world application, and project objective.
