Chemical Formulas

Context

Chemical compounds are substances formed by two or more chemical elements, and their characteristics are different from the elements that compose them. To structure and represent them, chemistry uses what we call chemical formulas, which are ways to express information about the atoms that make up a particular substance.

The chemical formula allows us to understand the elements that form a substance and the exact proportion of these elements. There are two main types of chemical formulas: the molecular formula, which indicates the types of elements and the exact number of each within the substance, and the structural formula, which, in addition to the information present in the molecular formula, also informs how the atoms are organized within the molecule.

Learning about chemical formulas is essential because these representations are one of the pillars for understanding more complex chemistry concepts. They are used in virtually all chemical reactions, serving as the basis for the analysis of these reactions and for the understanding of the resulting products.

From understanding the formation of water to the production of medicines, from the food we consume to the fuel we use in our cars, chemical formulas are essential. They are present in various aspects of our lives, even in places we least imagine, such as on product labels indicating their ingredients.

Chemistry, and specifically the understanding of chemical formulas, is essential for important advances in humanity, such as the development of new drugs and the production of food and energy more efficiently and sustainably. Understanding chemical formulas means understanding a little more about the world around us and how we can transform it.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Chemistry of Superfoods"

Activity Objective:

Students will research some foods considered "superfoods" (such as quinoa, chia, goji berry, among others) and will identify, through research, the main chemical compounds present in these foods, representing them through their respective chemical formulas.

Detailed Project Description:

This project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students and should require approximately two to four hours of work per participating student.

Students should choose five "superfoods" to research and report on. For each food, students must identify three of its main chemical compounds and represent them through their respective chemical formulas.

Additionally, they must explain the role that each of these compounds plays in human body health.

Required Materials:

This activity only requires internet access for research and some text editing software for the creation of the final report.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Group Formation: Students must organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 participants.

  2. Food Selection: Each group must choose five superfoods to be the focus of their project.

  3. Research: Each group must research the chemical components of these foods and select three important chemical compounds for each food.

  4. Representation of Chemical Formulas: Students must research and represent the chemical formulas of the compounds they identified.

  5. Explanation of the importance of the compounds: Each group must research the benefits each compound brings to health and document it in their report.

  6. Preparation of the report: After completing the research and identifying the chemical formulas, each group must compile their findings into a final report.

Project Deliverables:

The final result of the project will be a written report containing:

  1. Introduction: Presentation of the chosen foods and a brief description of the health benefits associated with the consumption of these foods.

  2. Development: For each food, a detailed description of the three identified chemical compounds must be provided, including the compound's name, its chemical formula, and a description of its function and importance for human health.

  3. Conclusion: Groups must reflect on what they have learned throughout the project, including the importance of chemistry in nutrition and in our daily lives.

  4. Bibliography: Groups must indicate all sources of information used throughout the project, including websites, books, scientific journal articles, YouTube videos, etc.

The report should follow the typical format of a scientific report and reflect the students' understanding of chemical formulas and their role in human nutrition.
