Mixtures can be classified as homogeneous (where the components cannot be differentiated) or heterogeneous (where it is possible to identify each of the different substances). Now, how about delving deeper into the subject and finding out how to differentiate them from each other?
Importance of the Theme
Understanding substances and mixtures is the key to understanding the world around us. From the functioning of our body to the creation of new materials, the study of substances and mixtures is present. For example, understanding what a homogeneous mixture is essential to understand why the air (a mixture of gases) seems the same everywhere.
Furthermore, the separation of mixtures is a frequent activity in laboratories and industries, being a very important method in the production of medications, water purification, food production, among others. Therefore, the study of substances and mixtures is fundamental for our daily lives. And not only that, it is also the basis for understanding many other concepts within Chemistry.

Project Objective
This activity aims to allow students to understand and differentiate pure substances from mixtures, the different types of mixtures, and how they can be separated.
Detailed Project Description
This project, divided into practical and theoretical activities, will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be responsible for conducting experiments involving the separation of substances from a complex mixture. In addition, students must produce a report confirming their learnings from the experiments.
Necessary Materials
- Sand
- Salt
- Charcoal
- Water
- 3 transparent containers
- Coffee filter
- Tablespoon
- Stove or another heat source
Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity

Each group must create a complex mixture in one of the containers, adding 2 tablespoons of sand, 1 tablespoon of salt, and half a block of charcoal to the water.

Note the initial appearance of the mixture. Can you identify the different substances in it?

The next step is the separation. First, let's remove the most evident component: the charcoal. Using a spoon, remove the charcoal from the container.

The next component to be separated is the sand. For this, use the filtration method. Place the coffee filter in one of the empty containers and pour the mixture from the initially used container into it. Wait for the saltwater (filtered) to pass through the filter and the sand (residue) to be retained.

Finally, to separate the salt from the water, use the evaporation method. Place the saltwater directly on the stove or another heat source and let it evaporate until only the salt remains in the container.

After conducting the experiment, each group must write a project report, where they will report on the experience, the learnings, and the discovery about substances and mixtures.
