Context

Isotopes, isotones, and isobars are fundamental concepts in the universe of chemistry and physics. They refer to differences in atomic structure that result in distinct atoms of the same element (isotopes), different atoms that have the same number of neutrons (isotones), or different atoms with an equal mass number (isobars).

To understand these concepts, we need to delve a little into the atomic model. The nucleus of an atom is composed of protons and neutrons. Project Objective

The project aims to deepen students' understanding of isotopes, isotones, and isobars through research, experimentation, and application of concepts in a practical project.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for researching, investigating, and preparing a presentation on the practical implications and everyday uses of isotopes, isotones, and isobars in different fields, such as medicine, agriculture, archaeology, and nuclear physics.

The goal is to explore the different properties and uses of these atomic species, as well as to understand their practical applications in our daily lives. The project should be based on rigorous research and should include at least two disciplines.

Required Materials

  1. Internet access for research.
  2. Presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, or similar.
  3. Academic and scientific bibliographic references (articles, books, educational videos, etc.).
  4. Image and/or video editing software.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Divide students into groups of 3 to 5 members.

  2. Each group should choose at least two fields of study for investigation (medicine, agriculture, archaeology, nuclear physics, etc.).

  3. The groups should research and collect information on the use of isotopes, isotones, and isobars in the chosen fields. The research should be thorough and based on reliable bibliographic references.

  4. Based on the information found, the groups should develop a script for a presentation. The presentation should include clear sections of introduction, development (which should include the theoretical explanation of the concepts of isotopes, isotones, and isobars and their application in the chosen fields), conclusions, and bibliography used.

  5. Presentation: each group should present their findings to the class. The presentation can be done virtually or in person and should last a minimum of 20 minutes.
