Introduction

Matter is everything that occupies space and has mass. It is formed by very small particles called atoms and molecules. It can exist in various states, such as solid, liquid, and gas, each with distinct properties. Furthermore, matter can also be differentiated into body and object, concepts that, although they may seem similar, have particularities that make them distinct from each other.

The importance of studying matter is that it is present in everything that surrounds us. From the air we breathe, to the food we eat, to the objects we use in our daily lives, everything is composed of matter. Understanding its nature allows us to comprehend how the universe works and how we can manipulate it to create new materials, products, and technologies.

It is a great conceptual challenge, as the concepts are quite abstract. However, they are essential for us to understand the phenomena that occur around us, and even within us. Therefore, it is essential that you, as young scientists, dive headfirst into this study!

Contextualization

Understanding the initial aspects of matter is the basis for various branches of science and technology. Such knowledge enables, for example, the development of new materials with specific properties, the production of more efficient medications, and the creation of more sustainable technologies. Thus, the study of matter is fundamental for the progress of humanity.

The relevance of this topic lies precisely in the applicability of this knowledge in various areas of our lives. Whether in the development of new technologies, in energy production, in disease treatment, in environmental preservation, among many other examples, the initial aspects of matter are present.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Magic of Matter: From Particles to Objects!"

Project Objective

To develop a solid understanding of the principles of matter, its properties, and the distinction between matter, body, and object. Students will create a representative model of a chemical element, correlating it to an everyday object.

Detailed Project Description

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students, with a duration of approximately 5 to 10 hours. Each group will choose an element from the periodic table to serve as the basis for the creation of their model. Additionally, the group will correlate this element to an everyday object, explaining their choice.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or cardstock
  • Colored pens or markers
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Recyclable materials (Optional)

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution

  1. Preparatory Study: Before starting the practical activity, study the topics of matter, body, and object, as well as the properties of matter.

  2. Element Selection: In a group, choose a chemical element from the periodic table to be the focus of the project.

  3. Research: Conduct a detailed research on the chosen element. Note its main characteristics, such as its atomic number, atomic mass, its main uses, among other relevant aspects.

  4. Correlation with the Object: Relate the chosen element to an everyday object. For example, if the chosen element was aluminum, the object could be a soda can. Explain the choice of the object and how it relates to the element.

  5. Model Creation: Using the cardstock or cardboard, create a model of the atom of the chosen element, illustrating its respective protons, neutrons, and electrons.

  6. Presentation: Prepare a presentation explaining the model, the chosen object, and the relationship between them. This presentation should contain the previously researched content about the element.

  7. Supporting Document: In a group, write a project report, which should include:

    • Introduction: Here, you should contextualize the theme, explain its relevance and real-world application, and express the project's objective.

    • Development: The theory about matter, body, and object should be explained, the activity detailed, the methodology used indicated, and the results obtained presented and discussed.

    • Conclusion: Return to the main points, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.

    • Bibliography: List the sources that were used to assist in the project work.

At the end of the project, students should have acquired a solid understanding of matter, body, and object, as well as developed fundamental socio-emotional skills, such as time management, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
