Chemistry, as we all know, is a discipline that permeates our lives in various aspects. A fundamental part of it is the nomenclature of chemical compounds, which is how we identify a substance. In this project, we will focus on the nomenclature of a specific class of these compounds - salts.
Salts are compounds formed by the reaction of an acid with a base, a process also known as neutralization. They are commonly found in our daily lives. Some examples include table salt (sodium chloride), gypsum (calcium sulfate), and saltpeter (potassium nitrate), used in fertilizers. Learning to name salts correctly is essential for anyone studying or working with chemistry.
Introduction
In chemistry, knowing the correct nomenclature of salts is not just a matter of memorization, but of understanding the logic behind the names. The nomenclature of salts is based on the idea that a salt is composed of a cation (from a base) and an anion (from an acid). To name a salt, we basically name the cation and then the anion. For example, table salt, which is formed by sodium cations and chloride anions, is called sodium chloride.
However, nomenclature can become a bit more complicated when dealing with transition metal salts, which can have more than one oxidation number, or with polyatomic anions. For example, copper sulfate can be CuSO4 (where copper has an oxidation state of +2) or Cu2(SO4)3 (where copper has an oxidation state of +3). In these cases, we indicate the metal's oxidation state by placing a Roman numeral after the metal's name, as in copper(II) sulfate for CuSO4.
Practical Activity: "The Salt Journey"
Project Objective
The objective of this interdisciplinary project is to allow students to learn about salt nomenclature while developing their research, critical thinking, teamwork, and academic writing skills.
Project Description
In the "The Salt Journey" project, student groups will select a common salt and conduct a detailed investigation. They will explore the salt's origin, its correct nomenclature (including identifying any oxidation states), its use in society and industry, as well as its chemical and physical properties.
To make the project interdisciplinary, students will also investigate the chosen salt's role in a historical or geographical context, thus connecting the study with the disciplines of History or Geography.

Step by Step
Groups should follow the steps below to carry out the project:

Choose a common salt for study. Some examples include sodium chloride (table salt), calcium carbonate (chalk), sodium nitrate (saltpeter), sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), among others.

Conduct research on the chosen salt. Research should cover:
- The salt's nomenclature, including the identification of cations, anions, and oxidation states.
- The salt's physical and chemical properties.
- The salt's applications in society and industry.
- The history of the chosen salt's use or its relationship with a specific geographical context.

After the research, groups should create an educational presentation to explain their findings.

Finally, the group should write a detailed academic report documenting what was learned during the project.
The expected duration for completing this project is approximately 15 hours per student.
Project Deliverables
The completion of this project will result in two main deliverables:

An educational and creative presentation: The goal is to translate the research findings in an engaging and educational manner. The presentation can be done using any means the group finds most suitable (Powerpoint, poster, video, etc.). The presentation may include theoretical parts, practical demonstrations, dramatizations, interactive quizzes, and so on.

A written report: The report, which should follow the structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography, is where students will document their research in depth. In the introduction, they should contextualize the topic, its relevance, and the report's objective. In the development, they should detail the research conducted, the working methodology, as well as the nomenclature and properties of the salt studied. In the conclusion, they should reiterate their main points, discuss what they have learned, and conclude the report. The Bibliography is the section where they will include all sources of information used during the project. In all sections of the report, students should seek to make connections between facts, argue logically and clearly, and demonstrate a deep understanding of the topic studied.
