Chemistry is a science that studies matter, its properties, how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances, and how substances interact with energy. Many facts of everyday life are inherently dependent on chemistry. Chemistry is part of everything in our lives and, consequently, a basic knowledge of chemistry is essential. In this sense, the study of oxidation number, or NOx, is one of the fundamental pillars of Chemistry.

The oxidation number (NOx) is an extremely important concept in Chemistry. NOx is a number that indicates the charge of an atom when in a molecule, ion, or compound, if all ligands are removed. It is a way to keep track of electron transfers between atoms. This concept is fundamental in various branches of Chemistry, including electrochemistry, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry.

Importance of NOx

This study is not limited to the academic sphere, as it has practical application in our daily lives. It is fundamental for understanding redox reactions, which are essential in many industrial processes, such as the production of pure metals from their ores, energy production in batteries, and protection of structures against corrosion.

Furthermore, the study of NOx contributes to the understanding of advanced topics in Chemistry, such as balancing chemical equations, and to various biological processes, such as cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Knowing how to calculate NOx is therefore essential for those who wish to deeply understand these processes.

Activity Title: Unraveling NOx

Project Objective

Develop an understanding of the oxidation number (NOx) and its practical application in Chemistry through a problem-solving challenge.

Detailed Project Description

In this practical activity, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will receive a set of chemical compounds and their task will be to calculate them and present the results in a well-structured report.

It is proposed that this task lasts one week, with an estimated execution time of 2 to 4 hours per student.

Required Materials

  • List of chemical compounds
  • Note-taking material (paper, pen)
  • Research materials (books, computer with internet access)

Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution

  1. Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Study the concept of NOx using the recommended resources and others found during research.
  3. Receive the list of chemical compounds that will be provided by the teacher.
  4. Develop a work plan for the activity, dividing responsibilities among group members.
  5. Calculate the NOx of the chemical compounds presented in the list.
  6. Document the NOx calculation process for each compound in the report, including a detailed step-by-step guide on how they arrived at the final result.
  7. Write the final report, which should include the introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used.
  8. Review the report as a group, ensuring that all members contributed and agree with the content presented.
  9. Submit the final report to the teacher on the stipulated date.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, groups must submit a report containing:

  • Introduction: The student must contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application as well as the objective of this project.
  • Development: The student must explain the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: The student must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
  • Bibliography: The student must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

This document should be written collaboratively, with all group members contributing to each section, thus ensuring that all the skills necessary for the project are acquired by each member.
