Context
Chemistry is the science that investigates the composition, structure and properties of matter, and how these change during chemical reactions. An essential component of this discipline is the understanding of Physical and Chemical Phenomena that take place around us and within us.
A chemical phenomenon is a process that changes the chemical identity of a substance, meaning a new substance is formed. On the other hand, a physical phenomenon is a process that does not change the chemical identity of the substance, i.e. after the physical phenomenon, the substance remains the same.
Throughout this project, we will explore and build a solid understanding of these phenomena, learn how to differentiate them and understand how we can apply them in our daily lives and the modern world.
These concepts are of great importance in various industries and technological innovations. For example, by understanding the difference between these two phenomena, we are able to comprehend how medicines work, how food is produced, how new materials are developed, and even the impact humans have on the environment.
This understanding allows us to take control of such processes and use them in our favor. Without realizing, we come across these phenomena in our daily lives, whether it is freezing water, rusting iron or cooking an egg.

Hands-on Activity - "Unveiling Physical and Chemical Phenomena"
Project Objective
By the end of this project, students should be able to:
- Identify physical and chemical phenomena;
- Distinguish between physical and chemical phenomena through hands-on experiments;
- Apply the acquired knowledge to real-life contexts, interpreting the phenomena that surround us.
Project Description
Groups are to conduct a set of experiments to observe and analyze physical and chemical phenomena. Each group must document their observations, record their results, and subsequently create a report on their experimentations. Each chosen experiment should be designed to illustrate a specific physical or chemical phenomenon.
Required Materials
- Ingredients for the experiments (depending on group choices, this may include vinegar, baking soda, water, paper, matches, etc.);
- Containers to conduct the experiments;
- Personal safety gear (gloves, goggles);
- Camera or smartphone to document the experiments.
Step-by-Step Activity
- Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Experiment Selection: Each group must select two experiments, one that illustrates a physical phenomenon and another that illustrates a chemical phenomenon. The choice must be justified and approved by the teacher.
- Preparation: With all necessary materials, students should carry out their experiments, making sure to take all safety precautions.
- Documentation: Record every step of the experiment. This may include notes, drawings and photographs.
- Analysis and Discussion: Students should discuss the results, identifying whether the phenomenon is physical or chemical and explaining why. Each group should also discuss the practical applications of the phenomenon in question.
- Report Creation: Using their notes and documentation, each group must create a detailed report of their findings.
The report must include the following elements:
Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of the project.
Development: Explanation of the theory behind the chosen physical and chemical phenomenon, detailed description of the activity carried out, methodology used, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
Conclusion: Summary of the main points, lessons learned and conclusions drawn about the project.
Bibliography: Indication of the sources used as a basis for the work done in the project.
The project should take one month to complete, with each student expected to spend between five and ten hours on it. Remember, the goal of this project is not only to assess your knowledge of physical and chemical phenomena, but also to improve your collaboration, communication, problem-solving, time management and creative thinking skills.
