Context

Introduction

Chemistry is a science that fills our lives with colors, flavors, and shapes. Studying it is to better understand the universe around us and how we interact with it. In this project, we will address one of the most significant topics in this discipline: simple and compound substances.

A substance is classified as simple when it is formed by a single type of chemical element. In other words, simple substances are those whose molecules are formed by the same type of atom. Common examples are gaseous oxygen (O2) and gaseous nitrogen (N2), which make up most of the air we breathe.

On the other hand, we have compound substances, which are formed by two or more types of chemical elements. These substances have molecules formed by different types of atoms. Water (H2O), for example, is a compound substance, formed by the elements hydrogen and oxygen. The possibility of combinations between different chemical elements gives rise to countless compound substances.

Context

Simple and compound substances are present in our daily lives inescapably. Every breath we take is a mixture of simple substances like oxygen and nitrogen. The water we drink and use daily is a compound substance. Understanding the nature of these substances and how they interact is essential not only for science but for life as we know it.

Furthermore, understanding the concept of simple and compound substances is the key to learning about many other areas of chemistry, such as stoichiometry, organic chemistry, and inorganic chemistry. This knowledge can help us develop new technologies, medicines, and materials.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Unveiling Substances: Simple or Compound?"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to make students understand in a practical and intuitive way the distinction between simple and compound substances, investigating examples of these substances in our daily lives and presenting their findings through an educational infographic.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students will work in groups of three to five people to:

  1. Identify examples of simple and compound substances that are present in our daily lives.
  2. Investigate each identified substance, including its chemical composition, molecular structure, physical and chemical properties, and uses.
  3. Create an educational infographic highlighting the investigated substances, their characteristics, and the distinction between simple and compound substances.

The activity should be carried out within a one-month period, and it is expected that each student dedicates between five and ten hours to the project.

Required Materials

The materials needed to carry out the activity include:

  • Chemistry books or reliable online reference sources for research.
  • Software or application for creating the infographic (such as Canva, Piktochart, or the tool of your choice).
  • Computer or tablet with Internet access.

Step by Step

1. Group Organization

Firstly, students must organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 people. Collaboration is essential for the project's completion, and each group member should contribute to research, analysis, and infographic creation.

2. Research

Each group must identify at least three examples of simple substances and three examples of compound substances that are present in our daily lives. Then, students should investigate each substance, identifying its chemical composition, molecular structure, physical and chemical properties, and uses.

3. Infographic Creation

Based on the collected information, the group should create an educational infographic. The infographic should contain clear and accurate information about each investigated substance and highlight the distinction between simple and compound substances. It is important that the infographic is visually appealing and easy to understand.

4. Document Writing

After completing the practical activity, students must work together to write a document in the form of a report. This report should contain four main sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

In the Introduction section, students should contextualize the project's theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the project's objective.

In the Development section, students should describe the theory related to simple and compound substances, explain the activities carried out in detail, describe the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.

In the Conclusion section, students should summarize the main points addressed in the report, bring out the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions from the project.

Finally, in the Bibliography section, students should indicate all sources of information used during the project.

Project Delivery

The project will be considered completed with the delivery of the infographic and the written document. In addition, each group must be prepared to present their infographic to the class and answer questions about their work.

The final delivery of the project is an opportunity for students to demonstrate not only their knowledge of simple and compound substances but also their research skills, information synthesis, teamwork, and effective communication.
