Contextualization and Introduction

In our world, everything we can touch, see, feel, that is, everything that is perceptible to our senses is composed of matter. The water we drink, the air we breathe, the food we eat, are all examples of matter. In Chemistry, one of the main objectives is to understand how matter behaves and what its properties are.

Matter can be characterized in different ways. The general properties are those that all substances have, such as mass and volume. The specific properties are those that allow to distinguish one substance from another, and are divided into physical, chemical and organoleptic properties.

The physical properties of matter are those that we can observe or measure without altering the identity of the substance. The color, texture, melting point and boiling point are examples of physical properties. The chemical properties are those that describe the ability of a substance to transform into another, for example, rust is the result of a chemical property of iron. The organoleptic properties are those that can be perceived by our senses, such as taste, smell, color and texture.

This project aims to deepen the knowledge about the properties of matter, analyzing and classifying them in their different categories (physical, chemical and organoleptic), to better understand and apply these concepts in everyday life.

The importance of understanding the properties of matter is reflected in several everyday applications and in various areas of science. When we cook, for example, we observe chemical transformations happening and the use of the physical properties of the ingredients. In Medicine, the development of drugs depends on the understanding of the chemical properties of the substances. The organoleptic properties are essential in the food and perfume industries.

In addition, understanding these properties and the way matter behaves can help us develop solutions to current world problems, such as the search for new materials and techniques that can contribute to sustainability and the development of new technologies.

To delve into the basic concepts of the project, a good source of study is the book "Chemistry - The Central Science", by Brown, LeMay, Bursten, Murphy and Woodward. Another reliable source is the Khan Academy website, which offers classes with practical examples, as well as exercises to practice the acquired knowledge.

Project Objective

Work in groups of 3 to 5 students to investigate and classify different materials according to their physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties. Students will also present how the studied concepts apply in real-world contexts in a written paper.

Detailed Description of the Project

Students will be challenged to collect a series of different materials, which can be easily found at home or at school, and classify the different properties of these materials. The more diverse the set of materials, the richer the work will be. The students will then design experiments to explore the physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties of these materials and report their conclusions through a report.

Materials Needed

  • Various materials with diverse properties: food, metals, liquids, gases, etc.
  • Laboratory equipment for physical and chemical experiments: test tubes, scales, thermometers, etc.
  • Safety equipment: gloves, goggles, apron.

Detailed Step-by-Step Activity

  1. Group formation and material selection: Students should organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 people and select the materials to be investigated. The groups should strive to choose materials that are safe but also diverse enough to present a wide range of properties to be investigated.

  2. Experiment planning: Students should plan a series of experiments that explore the different properties of the chosen materials. This should include experiments that examine physical, chemical, and organoleptic properties. The experiments should be designed to be safe and should be carried out under the supervision of a teacher.

  3. Conducting the experiments: Students conduct the experiments as planned, carefully recording the results of each one.

  4. Writing the report: Students should produce a report that includes the following sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and References. In the Introduction, students should present the theme, justify the relevance of the study of the properties of matter and expose the objectives of this work.
