Introduction to Simple Present in English

The simple present is one of the most used verb tenses in the English language and is crucial for effective communication. It is used to describe habitual actions, general events, universal truths, and daily routines. Unlike Portuguese, English has a particular way of using the simple present, which varies depending on the subject of the sentence. Therefore, learning to use it correctly will be a vital skill for your journey in learning English.

The simple present is governed by specific rules according to the subject and the type of verb. We will see throughout this project that regular verbs follow a standard formation rule, while irregular verbs have their own forms that must be memorized. This project will address both types of verbs so that you acquire a complete understanding of the use of the simple present.

Learning the simple present will allow you to verbalize and write about daily actions, feelings, and thoughts in the present. This will not only enhance your ability to communicate but also provide the foundation for learning other verb tenses in English.

The Importance of Simple Present

The English language is one of the most spoken languages worldwide, used as a means of communication in various areas such as business, technology, entertainment, and more. It is in this context that the correct use of the simple present becomes invaluable. It is used not only to describe the present but also to discuss future plans and scheduled events, expanding the range of situations in which it can be used.

Mastering the simple present will boost your confidence and competence in English, allowing you to engage in dialogues, read texts, and even write in a more natural way. Furthermore, most English proficiency exams, such as TOEFL and IELTS, assess the student's knowledge of verb tenses, including the simple present.

Activity Title: Representing Simple Present through Videoclips

Project Objective:

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of the simple present in English through the creation of videoclips that represent the use of this verb tense. Students will use the simple present to describe daily actions, routines, feelings, and thoughts.

At the end of the project, students will produce a report where they will contextualize the importance of the topic, describe the process of creating the videoclips, discuss the results obtained, and present their conclusions.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 participants. Each group will be responsible for creating a 3 to 5-minute videoclip that illustrates the correct use of the simple present in English in different contexts. The videoclips must include dialogues and/or narrations that make abundant use of this verb tense.

Each group must choose a theme for their videoclip that may involve actions, events, universal truths, and/or daily routines. For example, family, friendship, school life, hobbies, sports, nature, among others.

Additionally, each group will make a presentation of their videoclip to the class and deliver a written report detailing the entire process and reflections on the topic.

Required Materials:

  1. Video camera or smartphone with filming capability.
  2. Computer with video editing software.
  3. Writing material for the elaboration of the script and the final report.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Group Formation: Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members.

  2. Theme Selection: Each group must choose a theme for their videoclip that may involve actions, events, universal truths, and/or daily routines.

  3. Scriptwriting: Groups must create a script for the videoclip in English, ensuring the appropriate use of the simple present.

  4. Videoclip Production: With the script completed, groups must film and edit their videoclip, adapting it to the stipulated time of 3 to 5 minutes.

  5. Videoclip Presentation: Each group will present their videoclip to the class, explaining its content and the use of the simple present in it.

  6. Final Report: Finally, each group must write a report, in English, detailing the process of creating the videoclip, discussing the challenges and successes, reflecting on the application of the simple present in different contexts, and sharing the conclusions reached.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of this project, each group must deliver:

  1. The produced videoclip, corresponding to the chosen theme and predominantly using the simple present verb tense in English.

  2. An oral presentation of the videoclip, explaining its content and how the simple present was applied.

  3. A final written report in English, which must follow the following format:

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme and project objective.
    • Development: Explanation of the process of creating the videoclip, including the choice of theme, scriptwriting, production, and editing of the videoclip. Here, the group must also explain and discuss the various ways the simple present was applied in their videoclip.
    • Conclusion: The group must reiterate the main points addressed in the report, reflect on the lessons learned from the project, and share the conclusions reached.
