The Earth is a living planet, with a diversity of natural habitats known as biomes. A biome is defined as a large community of plants and animals that lives in a specific region of the world, with specific climatic and geographical conditions. Within biomes, there are various ecosystems, which are communities of organisms that interact with each other and with their physical environment.

Biomes are classified as terrestrial and aquatic. Terrestrial biomes include tropical forests, savannas, deserts, tundras, and temperate forests, among others. Aquatic biomes are divided into marine and freshwater, and include seas, oceans, lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Each biome has unique characteristics and harbors a diversity of its own life, with plant and animal species adapted to the specific conditions of each location.

Understanding biomes is essential to comprehend how life on the planet is organized and distributed. Furthermore, biomes play a vital role in regulating global climate and in the production of natural resources, such as water, fertile soil, and oxygen, which are essential for the survival and well-being of human beings.

Importance of biomes and their application in the real world

Studying biomes is important because it allows us to understand the complexity and interdependence among different natural systems. This helps us recognize the importance of conservation and responsible management of natural resources to ensure the sustainability of the planet.

"Biome Explorers: An Interactive Journey Through the World's Ecosystems"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to explore, analyze, and understand the diversity and complexity of terrestrial and aquatic biomes present in the world, as well as their economic and socio-environmental impacts.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students will conduct a detailed research on two biomes of their choice (one terrestrial and one aquatic). They will collect, analyze, and present critical information about each biome, including aspects such as geographical location and distribution, physical characteristics, flora and fauna, human impacts, and cultural or spiritual significance.

Next, students will create a multimedia presentation (It can be a video, a slideshow, a webpage, a podcast, a digital poster, etc.) to share their findings in a creative and engaging way.

Within the presentation, students should include:

  1. An overview of each biome, including relevant images, maps, and graphs.
  2. An analysis of the economic and socio-environmental impacts of each biome.
  3. A discussion on local agro-extractive practices and commitment to sustainability.
  4. A conclusion reflecting on what they have learned and their insights on the importance of biomes for life on the planet.

To complement the multimedia presentation, each group will prepare a detailed written document, organized into the following topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

Required Materials

  • Books, documents, reliable websites, videos, podcasts, or any other relevant material for biome research.
  • Computer with internet access and necessary programs to create the multimedia presentation.

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Hold an initial meeting with your group to divide tasks and define the biomes you will research.
  2. Start researching the chosen biomes. Each group member should research different aspects of the biome, such as location, climate, flora and fauna, human impacts, cultural significance, and local agro-extractive practices.
  3. Discuss the research results with your group and start planning the presentation. Remember that the presentation should be visually appealing and informative.
  4. Work together to create the multimedia presentation. Ensure that all key information is included and that the presentation flows cohesively.
  5. Finalize the presentation and do a final review to ensure everything is correct and well presented.
  6. Alongside creating the multimedia presentation, each group should start writing the written document. This document should detail all the research conducted, the methodology used, the main findings, and conclusions. Keep in mind the following format for your document:
  • Introduction: Provide context on the topic, state the relevance of the chosen biomes, and the purpose of the project.
  • Development: Explain the theory behind the biomes, describe the steps taken to conduct the research, and present the results and findings. Include a detailed analysis of the economic, social, and environmental impacts of each biome.
  • Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the work, explain what was learned from the project, and the conclusions drawn about the researched biomes.
  • Bibliography: List all sources used during the project in standard academic format.
  1. After finalizing the document and the presentation, review the entire work to ensure you are satisfied with the final result. This is the time to make any final adjustments if necessary.
