Contextualization

Geomorphology is a branch of Geography that studies the Earth's surface and the processes that shape it. In a broader view, we could understand Geomorphology as the sector of natural sciences that analyzes the distribution, classification, description, and dynamics of relief forms.

This study addresses elements such as mountains, plains, valleys, depressions, and many others; in addition to seeking to understand the processes that cause changes in these environments, whether they are natural or caused by human action. The relief structure is closely linked to the types of rocks present, their origin, and how external agents act on them.

Rocks — classified as igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic —, due to their composition, resistance, and disposition, directly influence relief formation. Igneous rocks, formed by magma cooling, are generally erosion-resistant. Sedimentary rocks, resulting from sediment accumulation, are less resistant and more susceptible to the action of external agents. Metamorphic rocks, formed by the transformation of other rocks under high pressure and/or temperature conditions, present variable resistance.

The importance of studying geomorphology is undeniable. It is essential to understand the formation and evolution of the Earth's surface over geological time. Furthermore, understanding relief forms and types of rocks is essential for various human activities, such as urban planning, infrastructure construction, ore exploration, nature conservation, natural risk prevention, among others.

In the real world, every land occupation and use action is influenced by relief and rocks characteristics. Therefore, by understanding geomorphology, we will be able to carry out more conscious and sustainable interventions in the environment, causing less impact and ensuring the preservation of natural resources.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Building Earth's Relief: A Study on Geomorphology and Types of Rocks"

Project Objective:

The project aims to deeply understand the forms of Earth's relief and how different types of rocks impact its formation and evolution. Additionally, it seeks to develop skills such as teamwork, time management, and analytical-critical thinking.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, must conduct research on relief forms and types of rocks. After this research, they must build a physical relief model using different materials to represent the different types of rocks.

Project steps include:

  1. Research: on geomorphology (relief structure) and types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic). The research should include information on how each type of rock influences relief formation.

  2. Planning: the physical model. Students must select a type of relief to represent (mountain, plain, valley, etc.) and plan how they will build the model to represent the different types of rocks.

  3. Construction: of the physical model. Students must build the model according to the planning, using various materials such as clay, sand, stones, among others, to represent the different types of rocks.

  4. Presentation and report: students must present the model to the class, explaining the characteristics of the chosen relief and how the different types of rocks represented influenced its formation and evolution. Additionally, they must submit a written report detailing the entire project process, from research to model construction.

Necessary Materials:

  • Books, articles, and web pages for research on geomorphology and types of rocks.
  • Various materials for model construction, such as clay, sand, stones, among others.
  • Paper and pen for planning and reporting.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Completion:

  1. Group Formation: students must organize into groups of 3 to 5 participants.
  2. Research: each group must conduct detailed research on geomorphology and types of rocks.
  3. Model planning: each group must then plan the physical model they will build. The planning should be detailed, showing where each type of rock will be represented in the model.
  4. Model construction: groups must then build the model according to the planning.
  5. Model presentation: each group must present the model to the class, explaining the relief characteristics and how each type of rock impacted relief formation and evolution.
  6. Report writing: finally, each group must write a report detailing the entire project process. The report should be structured as follows:
    • Introduction: Contextualizing geomorphology and types of rocks, the relevance of this study, and the project's objective.
    • Development: Showing the research conducted, planning, and model construction.
    • Conclusions: Summarizing the main points, the learnings obtained, and the conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Indicating the sources used in the research.

At the end of the project, students will have acquired knowledge about geomorphology and types of rocks, as well as developed skills such as teamwork, time management, analytical-critical thinking, among others.
