Introduction
Cartography is the art, science, and technology of making maps. They are used to represent spatial data, that is, information that has a geographic location. In this way, maps become essential tools in understanding space and time, as they allow us to visualize patterns and trends, as well as the relationships between different geographic phenomena.
Throughout history, cartographers have used various methods to represent the three-dimensional world on two-dimensional surfaces. Each of these methods has its advantages and limitations, and they are suitable for different datasets or objectives. When creating a map, the cartographer makes a series of choices that affect how the information is presented and interpreted.
For example, the cartographer may decide to use a different projection, which can alter the way areas and distances are represented, or may choose to focus on certain aspects of geography to the detriment of others, depending on the purpose of the map. All of this makes cartography a rich and complex discipline that blends elements of art, science, and technology.
The Importance of Cartography
Cartography is not only a tool for navigating or understanding the physical geography of the world we live in, but it is also a way to understand our history and society. Through the study of old maps, we can understand how people saw the world and how that view changed over time.
Furthermore, maps are also used in a variety of fields beyond geography, including urban planning, architecture, environmental management, politics, economics, among others. They are used to plan cities, understand the impact of human activities on the environment, conduct market analysis, plan election campaigns, and much more.
Maps can also be a tool of power and control since they can be used to legitimize actions and discourses. This makes cartographic literacy an essential skill to participate in an informed and critical way in contemporary societies.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Building our Time-Map
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to allow students to understand the fundamental principles of cartography and its application in the real world, and to develop their skills in collaboration, research, and cartography production, as well as organization, communication, and time management skills.
Detailed Project Description
In this project, students will research and collect information about the historical and geographical evolution of their city or region, and use this information to create a timeline map (Time-Map) that will display the area's evolution over time.
Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will be responsible for researching different periods or aspects of the history of their locality. They will use various sources such as historical maps, census records, government reports, books, websites, and interviews with older residents.
After collecting information, each group will draw a map representing their locality during the assigned period, incorporating relevant information such as physical, demographic, socio-economic, or cultural changes.
Finally, the individual maps will be joined to form a Time-Map, a graphic representation of the evolution of the locality over time.
Required Materials
- Large-sized cardboard paper for map creation.
- Pencils, pens, markers, rulers, compasses, erasers.
- Internet access for research purposes.
- Books and other sources of information for research.
Activity Steps

Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

Each group will be responsible for a specific stage of the history of their locality.

The groups should conduct research on their stage of history, collecting information about physical, demographic, socio-economic, and cultural aspects that will be represented on the map.

Using the collected information, each group should create a map representing their locality during the designated time period.

When all groups have finished their maps, assemble the Time-Map by combining all the groups' maps on a timeline.

Each group should present their map to the class, explaining the choices made and the information collected.
Project Deliverables
In addition to the collective Time-Map, the groups should produce a written report documenting the research, creation process, and conclusions obtained. The report should include:
- Introduction: Brief description of the project, its relevance, and real-world application.
- Development: Discussion of cartography theory, methodology used, detailed explanation of the activity, presentation, and discussion of findings.
- Conclusions: Summary of the main points of the work, reviewing the lessons learned and conclusions drawn.
- Bibliography: List of all sources used during research and project development.
Through this activity, students will have the opportunity to experience cartography in practice, understand its relevance in the real world, and develop important skills such as collaboration, research, critical thinking, and communication.
