Introduction

Cartography is the science that studies the representation of geographic space through maps. One of the main tools of the geographer, maps are essential for the representation and analysis of phenomena that occur in space. To deeply understand the role and importance of maps, we need to grasp specific concepts of Cartography, such as scale, projection, and geotechnology.

Scale is an essential component of any map, as it defines the proportion between the space depicted on the map and its corresponding in the real world. For example, on a map with a scale of 1:100,000, each centimeter on the map corresponds to one kilometer in reality.

Cartographic Projection is the method that allows representing the spherical surface of the Earth on a flat surface, which is the map. There are several projection techniques, each with its particularities and adaptations for certain types of analysis.

Geotechnology refers to the use of digital technologies for the analysis and representation of geographic space. Examples of geotechnology include GPS, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and digital mapping software.

Contextualization

Cartography is an essential tool in various areas of knowledge and human activity. In urban planning and urban design, Cartography assists in the development of plans and projects for cities. In Geography, it is the basis for spatial analysis, allowing us to understand phenomena such as population distribution, land use, climatic dynamics, among others.

Furthermore, Cartography is present in our daily lives in various ways. When we use a GPS application to locate ourselves or trace a route to a destination, we are using Cartography. When we follow the weather forecast through satellite maps, we are also utilizing Cartography. Therefore, understanding the basic concepts of Cartography is essential for a better comprehension of the world we live in.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Cartography in Action: Our City to Scale

Project Objective:

Students should build a map of the school and its surroundings on a reduced scale, understand the importance of scale and cartographic projection, and use geotechnology to digitize and make the created map available.

Detailed Project Description:

This is a practical cartography project in which students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people. The goal is to develop a better understanding of cartographic techniques and enhance teamwork, time management, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Required Materials:

  • Ruler
  • Compass
  • Graph paper
  • Colored pens
  • Scanning software (such as CamScanner, available for free)
  • Basic Image Editing Software (such as Paint, available on any Windows computer)

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will be tasked with creating a scaled-down map of the school and its surroundings.

  2. Students should conduct field research, measuring distances and proportions of the area to be mapped. Each centimeter on the map should represent a specific amount of meters in reality (for example, 1cm = 10m).

  3. After collecting the data, students will start drawing the map on graph paper, using the collected measurements and the defined scale.

  4. Once the map is ready, it should be digitized using scanning software (such as CamScanner) and later edited for clarity and aesthetics through image editing software (such as Paint).

  5. Finally, each group should prepare a presentation explaining the map creation process, the choice of scale, the projection used, and how geotechnology assisted in the project.

  6. As part of the submission, each group must write a document containing the following topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

  7. In the Introduction, students should contextualize the project theme, its relevance, and application in daily life, in addition to the project's objective.

  8. In the Development, students should explain the theory of cartographic scale, projection, and geotechnology they learned, detail the map creation process, and present the finalized map.

  9. In the Conclusions, students should summarize the main points of the project, reflect on what they learned from the experience, the difficulties encountered, and how they were overcome.

  10. In the Bibliography, students should indicate the sources used to develop the project, whether books, internet sites, videos, among others.

Connection between the Practical Activity and Project Deliverables:

The proposed cartographic practice will allow students direct contact with the concepts of scale and projection, as well as the application of geotechnology, in a playful and meaningful way. The produced map will be the tangible result of teamwork, spatial analysis performed, and application of learned concepts. The written report, in turn, will serve to demonstrate the theoretical understanding of the worked concepts, reflection on the activity carried out, and the students' argumentation and writing skills.
