World: Main Climates

Contextualization

The world's climate is a fascinating and immensely important subject. It is responsible for shaping our environment, influencing the economy, politics, and even the culture of all global societies. In this journey, we will explore the theme of the global climate not only from Geography but also delving into interdisciplinary aspects, such as Chemistry and Biology, combining theory and practice, generating significant learning.

In Geography, we will enter concepts such as climate elements (temperature, pressure, humidity and winds), climate types and the influence of climate on the world's biomes. In Chemistry, we will explore how the chemical composition of the atmosphere influences the climate, discuss the greenhouse effect and climate change. In Biology, we will discuss the relationship between living beings and the influence of climate on their lives.

To understand the climate is to understand how we live, how our activities influence and are influenced by it and how much we depend on the climate constancy for our survival. Climate change, for example, is a subject of utmost importance and relevance, with implications ranging from the extinction of species to the intensification of extreme climate phenomena.

Moreover, the study of climate is not something distant and impersonal: it directly affects our lives. Situations that we experience, such as prolonged droughts, intense rains, unseasonal snowfalls, are direct reflections of the behavior of the climate and how we are interacting with it.

Practical Activity: "The Faces of Climate"

Project's Objective

This project aims to provide a multidimensional understanding of climates around the world. The goal is for students to delve into atmospheric science, understand the scientific basis of climate, as well as the impact of climate change on human life and biodiversity.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for studying, analyzing and presenting a different type of climate (tropical, desert, temperate, polar, etc.). They will have to delve into various aspects of this climate, including, but not limited to, its chemical composition, impact on living beings and how it is being affected by climate change.

The groups will have to produce a short documentary (15-20 min) about the chosen climate using video editing tools. The documentary should include representative images, graphics, interviews (if possible, with professionals in the area) and any other relevant information.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Video editing software
  • Camera (a smartphone may be sufficient)
  • Graphic resources (maps, charts, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Each group chooses a type of climate to study.
  2. In-depth research on the chosen climate: characteristics, impact on human life and biodiversity, effects of climate change.
  3. Creation of a script for the documentary, which must be approved by the teacher.
  4. Production of the documentary: recording, editing and finalization.
  5. Presentation of the documentary to the class and submission of the complete report.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project execution, each group must deliver:

  1. Short documentary (15-20 min) in digital format.
  2. Written report, containing:
    • Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen climate, its relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of this subproject.
    • Development: Theory behind the chosen climate, explanation of the activity in detail, indicating the methodology used, presentation and discussion of results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Recapitulation of the main points, explanation of the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project.
    • Bibliography: Sources used to support the work, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The documentary and the report will be evaluated according to their depth, accuracy, creativity and clarity. It is essential that all group members participate and contribute to the project; therefore, collaboration and teamwork are fundamental for the success of this project.
