Soil is undeniably one of the most important natural resources for human survival. It plays a series of functions that are essential to the ecosystem balance, such as food production, water and climate cycle control, and biodiversity preservation.

Soil is composed of different mineral and organic elements that mix and organize into layers, forming what we call the soil profile. These layers, also known as horizons, have different compositions, colors, and textures, and are influenced by factors such as climate, relief, living organisms, parent material, and time. In other words, each soil is unique and reflects the environmental conditions to which it has been exposed.

Soil formation is a dynamic process, dependent on complex interactions between the environment and living beings. For this reason, soil can be considered an indicator of environmental quality, as any change in its balance can result in degradation processes such as erosion, compaction, chemical pollution, and loss of biodiversity.

The study of soil becomes even more relevant when considering the current global situation. The increase in population and the rise in consumption have put pressure on the sustainable management of soils around the world. Intensive agriculture, uncontrolled urbanization, and contamination by waste are just some of the factors that threaten the soil's ability to continue providing its valuable services.

In this sense, understanding the characteristics of soils, their functions, and the risks they are exposed to is essential for the adoption of more sustainable practices. This project aims to provide this understanding through a detailed investigation of the different aspects of soil.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Discovering the Soil – A Practical Analysis of the World Beneath Our Feet

Project Objective:

This activity aims to provide you, students, with a practical experience of investigating the different types of soils present in your local community and their importance in maintaining life and the environment.

Detailed Project Description:

In this project, students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people to collect samples of different types of soil found in the local community. After the collection, students will conduct experiments and analyses to characterize the different types of collected soil, focusing on characteristics such as texture, color, smell, and water retention capacity. Finally, students will propose a critical reflection on the relationship between soil and the environment.

Required Materials:

  • Buckets or containers for soil sample collection
  • Rubber gloves
  • Masks
  • Sieve
  • Buckets for water samples
  • Note cards to record observations
  • Transparent cups or containers for sedimentation experiment
  • Ruler
  • Scale for weighing samples
  • Camera to document the process
  • Internet access for research

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Collection Planning: The group should plan which locations to visit for soil sample collection. Think of places that may have different types of soil, such as parks, forests, agricultural fields, yards, riverbanks, etc.

  2. Sample Collection: Using rubber gloves and containers, collect a soil sample from each location. Try to collect at least three different types of soil. Record information such as location, observable characteristics of the site, and date/time of collection.

  3. Initial Soil Analysis: In a controlled environment (it can be at school or at home), examine each soil sample. Note characteristics such as color, texture (whether it is sandy, muddy, clayey, etc.), and smell.

  4. Sedimentation Test: Add water to a transparent cup halfway, then add the soil sample until the cup is almost full. Stir well and let the cup sit for 24 hours. After this period, you will be able to see the different soil layers that form. Record your observations.

  5. Research: Based on the analyses conducted, research more about the types of soil you found and their peculiar characteristics. Note your findings and try to link them to the observations you made.

  6. Report Elaboration: Finally, each group should produce a written report documenting the entire project. The document should contain the following sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Written Report: The report should be structured according to the following topics:
  • Introduction: In this section, you should contextualize the project, explaining its relevance and applicability in the real world. The goal is to explain, in your own words, why the study of soil is important.

  • Development: Here, you should provide details about the project itself. Include information about sample collection, analyses conducted, findings made, and conclusions you reached. Remember to use your photos to illustrate the work.

  • Conclusions: In this section, you should reflect on the implications of your findings. What did you learn by conducting this project? How can you use this knowledge to contribute to environmental preservation?

  • Bibliography: Include all sources of information you used during the project.

  1. Final Presentation: Each group will make an oral presentation to classmates and the teacher to share their findings. The presentation should be interactive and involve all group members.
