This science helps us understand our place in the world, the relationships between people and places, and the impact of physical and human phenomena on the landscape.

One of the main concepts studied in Geography is geographic space, which integrates the relationship between human beings and nature. Other fundamental concepts are landscape, territory, region, and place. These concepts help shape our understanding of the world and are essential for geographical studies.

The landscape is the representation of the space visible to the human eye. It is formed by two components: the natural (such as mountains, rivers, fauna, and flora) and the humanized (built through human action, such as cities, roads, agriculture). On the other hand, the territory is the surface of the globe occupied by a group, whether it be a family, a tribe, a people, or a country, where a certain control is exercised.

Importance of the theme and its application in the real world

Understanding the fundamentals of Geography is essential for the formation of citizens aware of their role in the world. This understanding helps us to locate ourselves, to understand the processes that shape our environment, and the interaction between different societies. Furthermore, this understanding allows for a better assessment and solution to contemporary environmental and socioeconomic problems.

We are constantly interacting with geographic space and modifying it, whether on a local or global scale. For example, the construction of a new building, a park, or a highway alters our landscape and our territory. The decisions we make in our daily lives, such as where we live, work, or study, are also influenced by our understanding of geographic space.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Exploring the Fundamentals of Geography: Our Local Community"

Project Objective:

This activity aims to lead students to investigate the main concepts of Geography through the analysis of their own community. The activity is intended for groups of 3 to 5 students and will last one week.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will explore, analyze, and record different aspects of their own locality/neighborhood/city, considering the concepts of geographic space, landscape, territory, region, and place. This exploration will be done through direct observations (following social distancing guidelines) and indirect observations (online research), and recorded through photographs and notes and incorporated into digital maps.

Required Materials:

1. Device for taking photos (cell phone, camera)
2. Internet access
3. Computer or device with image editing software (such as Google Slides or PowerPoint app)
4. Digital mapping software (Google My Maps, Maps.me, etc.)

Activity Steps:

1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group should choose a region for investigation: it can be a neighborhood, a city, a rural area, etc.
2. Start by researching the chosen locality - its history, demography, economy, physical geography, etc. Each group member should be responsible for one aspect. This information will be used to create the project report introduction.
3. Based on research and observations, students should identify and record elements that represent the key concepts of geographic space, landscape, territory, region, and place in the chosen locality. This may include photographs of natural and humanized landscapes, territorial demarcations, landmarks that define the place, etc.
4. Photos and notes should be organized and annotated on a digital map. Each photo/note should be placed in the corresponding location on the map and should be accompanied by a brief description explaining the relevant geographical concept.
5. Based on observations and research, students should write a detailed report explaining how the geographical concepts apply to the locality. This report should include an introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used (as explained in the project description).

Project Deliverables:

1. Digital Map: Should show the chosen locality and include students' photos and notes, each associated with its relevant geographical concept.

2. Written Report: Should be formatted according to the four project topics - Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography. The introduction should contextualize the chosen locality and its relevance to Geography concepts. In the development section, students should discuss the concepts of geographic space, landscape, territory, region, and place, explaining how they apply in the context of the chosen locality. The conclusions should highlight the main learnings from the project and final thoughts on the application of geographical concepts. Finally, the bibliography should list all sources of information used during the research.

The analysis, report writing, and creation of the digital map should encourage collaboration and communication among students, as well as develop skills such as time management, creative thinking, and problem-solving. Furthermore, this practical activity will allow students to apply and understand the fundamentals of Geography in a real context close to them.
