Earth, our home, is a very complex and dynamic body. Its study is a key to understanding our past, present, and future. One of the largest areas of study is physical geography, which deals with the structure of the Earth, especially the formation of continents. This area focuses on topics such as plate tectonics, which attempts to explain how continents formed and moved over millions of years.
Several billion years ago, Earth's continents were all together, forming a supercontinent called Pangaea. Over time, Pangaea began to split, forming the continents as we know them today. The way these continents were formed and how they continue to move, albeit slowly, has a huge impact on our planet and our lives.
For example, geological formations such as mountains and valleys are formed by the movement of tectonic plates. Climate change is also influenced by the location and movement of continents. Not to mention biodiversity, each continent has a diversity of specific flora and fauna according to its geological characteristics.
The goal of this project is to deepen the knowledge about the formation of continents and the structure of the Earth. In this process, you will work in teams, develop arguments, analyze data and information, compare and evaluate processes of space occupation and territory formation, as well as acquire socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
Practical Activity: "Recreating the Formation of Continents"
Project Objective:
The objective of this project is to reconstruct the movement of tectonic plates that led to the formation of continents through a physical model and a research report.
Detailed Project Description:
During this project, you will work in groups of 3 to 5 people to create a three-dimensional model of the Earth demonstrating the movement of tectonic plates over millions of years. Additionally, each group must create a detailed research report.
Required Materials:
- Modeling clay or clay of various colors
- Corrugated cardboard
- Colored pens
- Paper
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Computer with internet access for research
Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

Research the formation of continents and plate tectonics. Use the suggested additional resources and any other reliable resources you find useful.

Discuss in a group the main findings of the research and plan how you will represent the movement of continents in your model.

Using modeling clay or clay, create tectonic plates representing each continent at the beginning of the dinosaur era, when Pangaea is believed to have started to separate.

Position the tectonic plates on the corrugated cardboard according to the continents' positions at that time.

Move the tectonic plates to represent continental drift over millions of years, until reaching the current configuration of continents.

For each significant movement of the plates, make a schematic drawing and note the main geological events that occurred, such as mountain formation, volcanism, etc.

Prepare a research report, including the following topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

Introduction: Describe the reason for the study, the relevance of the topic, and the project's objective.

Development: Present the theory of plate tectonics and the formation of continents, explain the model in detail, describe the methodology used, and present the discussion of the results.

Conclusions: Conclude the work by summarizing your main points, recording the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn from the project.

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:
- The three-dimensional model demonstrating the movement of tectonic plates;
- The research report, which should complement the model with theoretical explanations, discussions of the results, and conclusions.
These two parts of the project should complement each other and together form the group's final contribution to this learning about the formation of continents and the structure of the Earth. Remember that the evaluation will not only be of the final product but also of the group process, research, debate, decisions made, and collaborative work.
