Industry Classification

Contextualization

Industries are economic units that transform raw materials into products for consumption. There are various types of industries, each with its own characteristics, and these differences are determined by various factors such as the nature of the product produced, the type of production process, the market for the product, among others. In our analysis, it is crucial to identify and understand these differences to gain a complete view of the role and importance of the industry in the economy and society.

The classification of industries is a crucial topic in Geography and Economics, as it allows us to understand the differences between the various industries and how they interact with society and the environment. This understanding is essential for effective planning, efficient management, and appropriate legislation. Furthermore, the classification of industries is a useful tool for comparative analysis between different regions and countries.

In the era of globalization, where economies are becoming increasingly interconnected and industrial production is often distributed across various countries and continents, understanding the classification of industries has become crucial. At the same time, industries evolve in response to emerging technologies, changes in consumer preferences, and environmental pressures. Therefore, it is important that we stay updated with these transformations.

As a study resource for this project, I suggest using the book 'Geography: Concepts and Themes' by Bertha Becker and others, which has a chapter dedicated to understanding the industry. Another suggestion would be the text 'The New Dynamics of Industry in the 21st Century' by David Bailey and Lisa De Propris, available on the internet, which addresses the issue of globalization and changes in the industry. In addition to these, I also recommend the website 'Brasil Escola', which has a series of educational articles and videos on the subject.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'The Industry Journey: Understanding, Classifying, and Analyzing Global Industries'

Project Objective

This project aims to allow students to deepen their knowledge about the different classifications of industries, understanding their impact and relevance in society and the global economy. Through the completion of this activity, students will have the opportunity to develop research skills, critical thinking, teamwork, and communication.

Detailed Project Description

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, they will conduct an in-depth investigation on the different types of industries present in the world. Each group will be responsible for a specific type of industry (extractive, manufacturing, basic, consumer goods, etc.), and they should conduct thorough research on the designated industry type. The research should cover the following aspects:

  • Industry characteristics: production processes, raw materials used, main products generated.

  • Socioeconomic impact: jobs created, impact on the economy (local and global), contribution to GDP.

  • Environmental impact: use of natural resources, pollutant emissions, impact on biodiversity.

  • Cases of industries representative of this classification in different countries/regions.

  • Analysis of the insertion and impact of these industries on local and global society and economy.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research and data collection.
  • Software for creating presentations (Powerpoint, Google Slides, etc).
  • Books and academic articles for reference.

Step by Step

  1. Form groups and assign each one a type of industry for research.
  2. Conduct an in-depth study of the assigned industry type, according to the criteria listed above.
  3. Collect and analyze data related to the economic, socio-political, and environmental impact of the researched industries.
  4. Create a presentation that includes all the collected data and information. This presentation should be clear, informative, and interactive.
  5. Present the final results to the class (each group should present their findings and analysis to the class).

Project Deliverables

Groups should deliver a presentation (in PowerPoint, Google Slides, or similar) that includes all the data and analyses collected during the research. Additionally, each group should present their findings to the class, providing an open discussion about the conclusions.

Students should also prepare a written report in the form of a scientific article that includes the following topics:

  • Introduction: Should contain the theme, its relevance, and real-world application.
  • Development: Should address the theory behind the classification of industries, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Should summarize the main points of the work, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions about the project.
  • Bibliography: Should list the sources of information used.
