Context

Ancient Greece is the civilization that has most influenced the development of the West. The main concepts and practices of politics, philosophy, science, art, and sports that make up our culture emerged with it. This project will focus on the Classical and Hellenistic Periods in order to understand how Ancient Greece shaped the world as we know it today.

The Classical Period of Ancient Greece (5th-4th centuries BCE) is considered the apogee of Hellenic civilization. It was a time marked by Athenian democracy, the Persian Wars, and the leadership of Athens, and later the dominance of Sparta and the Peloponnesian War. It was also a golden age for the arts, philosophy, and science.

Hellenism (4th-1st centuries BCE), for its part, is characterized by the expansion of Greek culture beyond Greece, largely due to the conquests of Alexander the Great. This period was marked by the fusion of Greek culture with Eastern cultures, giving rise to a new Hellenistic civilization.

Ancient Greece is important to us because many of our reflections on the citizen and the community, on law and justice, on the divine and the human, come from that time. Furthermore, the language they used and the ways of thinking guided the development of many concepts that are fundamental to modern education.

Moreover, the figure of Alexander the Great is not only important for the history of Greece, but also for world history. His military campaigns changed the face of the ancient world, uniting territories that stretched from Macedonia to India into a vast Hellenistic empire.

Practical Activity: "Ancient Greece Comes Alive: Reenacting the Classical and Hellenistic Periods"

Project Objective

To develop a play that represents a crucial period of Ancient Greece, focusing specifically on the Classical Period and Hellenism. The figure of Alexander the Great will also be explored. The goal is to have a practical and detailed understanding of this historical moment, while also improving teamwork, research, scriptwriting, and acting skills.

Detailed Project Description

Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group will be responsible for a scene representing an important characteristic or event from the Classical or Hellenistic period. Each group should research the topic of their scene, create a script, and then perform it for the class. The approach can be historical, cultural, political, etc., but it should always focus on the relevance of the chosen episode to the history of Greece and to the world as we know it today.

Materials Needed

To carry out this project, students will need research resources (books, internet, etc.), materials for scenery and costumes (which can be improvised with whatever is available), and a device to record the play, if necessary.

Step by Step

1. Students will form groups and choose or be assigned a topic to represent.

2. Each group should conduct thorough research on their topic, highlighting the main events, historical figures, and accomplishments.

3. After the research, students should create a script for a theatrical scene that represents the chosen topic. The script should reflect the research done, showing the group's understanding of the topic.

4. After completing the script, it will be time to prepare the scenery and costumes. This will require a good deal of creativity, since the goal is not perfect reproduction, but to convey the atmosphere and essence of the period.

5. Finally, the group will rehearse and perform the play for the rest of the class.

Project Delivery

At the end of the project, each group must submit a report explaining the process of creating and performing the play. This document should include:

• Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen topic, explaining its relevance in Ancient Greece and to the world in general.

• Development: Discuss the research conducted, the scriptwriting process, the preparation of the scenery and costumes, and the performance of the play itself, connecting each step to the theory learned in the course.

• Conclusions: The group should restate their main points, explain what they learned from the research and the completion of the project, and the conclusions they drew about the topic.

• Bibliography: Indication of the research sources used.

The final report should demonstrate a deep understanding of Ancient Greece, with consistent and detailed references to the research material, demonstrating how the project helped to deepen the students' understanding of the Classical Period and Hellenism.
