The history of Ancient Rome is as fascinating as it is complex, spanning over a millennium in its entirety. During this period, Rome evolved from a small Latin city-state in the Italian peninsula to a vast empire that came to dominate the Mediterranean and left an invaluable legacy on Western Civilization.

This trajectory of rise and dominance was not linear. Rome went through two main political systems before becoming an empire: the Monarchy and the Republic. Monarchy, which lasted from 753 BC (the traditional date of the founding of Rome) to 509 BC, saw Rome ruled by kings. The Republic, which replaced the Monarchy after a revolution, was a 500-year period in which Rome was ruled by consuls and a senate and saw Roman expansion accelerate.

Importance of the Subject

Ancient Rome shaped the world in ways that are still evident today. From its architecture to its language, laws, and systems of government, Rome left a profound legacy that is impossible to ignore. Understanding how Rome organized itself politically during the Monarchy and Republic helps one understand not only the history of Ancient Rome, but also our own.

The study of the Roman Monarchy and Republic helps one to understand the mechanisms of power and the political systems that were the basis for many of the democratic systems we find in the West today. Understanding the Roman political system and how it transformed over time also provides a solid foundation for understanding the transition of Rome from a city-state to an empire, and the impact this transformation subsequently had.

Practical Activity

Activity title: “Ancient Rome: From Monarchy to Republic”

Project Objective: The objective of the project is to create an interactive presentation explaining the transition of Rome from Monarchy to Republic. Students should use their research, communication, and problem-solving skills to gather relevant information and present it in an engaging and effective way.

Detailed project description: Students will be divided into groups of 3-5. Each group will be responsible for researching and creating a presentation explaining the political transition of Rome from Monarchy to Republic. The presentation should include information on:

• The main events that marked the Roman Monarchy and Republic
• The relevant characters of each period
• The changes that occurred in the social, economic, and political structure
• The importance and the legacies of these periods for the contemporary world

The presentation can be created using digital tools such as PowerPoint, Prezi, or Google Slides. Students may also include videos , images, maps, charts, and any other multimedia resources they deem relevant to make the presentation more interactive and engaging.

Required materials:

• Access to computers with internet and presentation creation software
• Books, articles, documentaries, and other materials for research

Step-by-step guide of the activity:

1. Students organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 members
2. Each group carries out detailed research on the Monarchy and Republic of Rome, focusing on the points proposed in the description of the project
3. After the research phase, groups begin to structure their presentation. The presentation should be organized in a way that the transition from Monarchy to Republic is clearly understood
4. The presentation is reviewed and refined by the group to ensure that all information is correct and presented in a clear and interactive way
5. Once the presentation is complete, each group prepares to present it to the class and answer questions

Project deliverables:

• An interactive presentation, which can be a PowerPoint, Prezi, or Google Slides file
• A written report accompanying the presentation. The report should include the following items:
  1. Introduction: Contextualization on the Monarchy and Republic of Rome, highlighting the relevance of this topic for understanding both History and the contemporary world
  2. Development: Exposition of the theory on the Roman Monarchy and Republic, detailed explanation of the activity carried out, indication of the methodology used in the research and discussion of the results obtained, all supported by the consulted bibliography
  3. Conclusions: Recap of the main points of the work, highlighting the lessons learned, as well as the conclusions on the transition from Monarchy to Republic in Rome. It is interesting that students also present their impressions about the technical and socioemotional skills developed during the project
  4. Bibliography: Indication of the sources consulted for the realization of the work. The bibliography should be duly formatted according to the citation style chosen by the teacher.

The expected time for the execution of the project is one week, with an estimated workload of two to four hours of work per student. The delivery date will be defined by the teacher.
