Contextualization

The Middle Ages, or the medieval period, was a unique era in human history that spanned from the 5th to the 15th century. Despite often being relegated to a 'transition period,' the Middle Ages was an era of creation, adaptation, and transformation. It forged many of the political, social, religious, and cultural systems that we still see reflected in our current society.

Studying the Middle Ages gives us the opportunity to examine and understand the clash and interaction between different cultures and belief systems, as well as the ways in which these interactions shaped history. The Middle Ages saw the rise of feudalism, a complex system of lord-vassal relationships that defined both social organization and the economy. Additionally, the Catholic Church played a central role in the medieval world, influencing nearly every facet of life.

By studying the Middle Ages, we are analyzing a historical period that helped shape the modern world. Far from being a monotonous parenthesis between classical antiquity and the Renaissance, the Middle Ages was an era of innovation and change. Understanding this period allows us to better grasp the roots of many institutions, ideas, and conflicts that continue to influence current society.

Throughout the project, you will explore the complexities of various aspects of the Middle Ages, from economy and society to culture and religion. You will have the opportunity to deepen your understanding through research, discussions, and creative activities.

Practical Activity: Medieval Fair

Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to actively and creatively explore, understand, and interpret life in the Middle Ages, engaging with aspects of medieval society, economy, religion, and culture. This will be done through the creation of a 'Medieval Fair,' where each group will represent a different aspect of medieval life.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for creating their own 'tent' at the Medieval Fair, representing a chosen aspect of the Middle Ages. Options include, but are not limited to: Economy and Trade, Beliefs and Religion, Social and Family Life, Art and Culture, and Government and Politics.

Depending on the chosen topic, the group should research and present an interactive scenario that illustrates their topic. For the Economy and Trade topic, for example, students can create a market tent with typical trade items of the time, along with information about currency, exchange systems, and trade routes.

Students should prepare an oral presentation explaining their topic, which will be presented to the class during the fair. Additionally, there should be at least one interactive activity related to their topic for tent visitors to participate in.

Required Materials

1. Research materials: books, articles, reliable websites, etc.
2. Materials for creating the tent and any items to be displayed or used in the presentation (cardboard, fabrics, paints, etc).
3. Materials for the interactive activity proposed by the group.

Step by Step

1. Group Formation and Topic Selection: Students should organize into groups of 3 to 5 people and choose the Medieval topic they will explore.

2. Initial Research: Students should conduct initial research to understand the key concepts of their topic. They should identify the key questions they need to answer about it.

3. Tent and Interactive Activity Planning: Based on their research, students should plan how they will represent their topic interactively and educationally. They should also plan an interactive activity for tent visitors.

4. Tent Construction: Students will need to build the tent and the necessary materials for the presentation and the interactive activity.

5. Final Presentation and Fair: Students will give an oral presentation to the class and conduct the interactive activity during the Medieval Fair.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, groups must submit a written report structured in four topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

• Introduction: Provide a contextualization of the chosen theme, its relevance in the context of the Middle Ages, and the project's objective.

• Development: Explain the theory behind the chosen theme, how the tent and the interactive activity represent the theme. Also, indicate the methodology used (how research was conducted, how the tent was created, how the interactive activity was planned and executed), and finally, present and discuss the results obtained (visitor feedback, difficulties encountered, learnings, and discoveries).

• Conclusions: Students should summarize the main points presented in the Introduction and Development, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.

• Bibliography: Include the sources used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
