European Maritime Expansion: Mercantilism

Contextualization

The European Maritime Expansion represents an important chapter in world history. It took place between the 15th and 17th centuries, marked by the great voyages undertaken by European powers such as Portugal, Spain, France, England, and the Netherlands. This was a period of intense pioneering, discoveries, colonization, and economic exploration that left deep marks on the later development of humanity.

This wave of maritime explorations was driven mainly by technological advances in navigation, by the political centralization of absolutist monarchies, by the spirit of adventure and discovery, and, above all, by the search for new trade routes to Asia. It resulted in the "discovery" of new lands, such as the American continent and the sea route to Asia through the Atlantic, skirting Africa.

Importance

Learning about the European maritime expansion helps us understand the formation of the world as we know it today. During this period, the world map was completely redrawn, new lands were discovered, trade routes were established, and entire populations were displaced.

In addition, the great voyages were the beginning of the globalization process, in its most embryonic forms. The dissemination of plants, animals, cultures, and diseases that occurred during this period is known as the "Great Columbian Exchange", and had a profound impact on the lives of peoples around the world, who were just beginning to make contact with each other on a global scale.

Practical Activity

Title of the activity: Sailing Through History: The European maritime Expansion

Project Objective:

Explore in depth the European maritime expansion, focusing on the great voyages made by Portugal and Spain, and understand its political, economic, cultural, and social implications.

Detailed description:

Groups of 3 to 5 students should conduct extensive research on the topic, including analysis of texts, graphs, maps, and other teaching materials. The activity will be divided into four parts:

  1. Research: Each group should conduct a broad and in-depth research on the great voyages, focusing on Portugal and Spain. The political, economic, and cultural factors that drove these nations to venture out to sea, as well as the impacts of these voyages on global civilization, must be considered.

  2. Elaboration of a Mural Map: Based on the research, the group should create a mural map showing the routes navigated by the Europeans, the territories discovered and colonized, and the main commercial and cultural exchanges that occurred due to the maritime expansion.

  3. Simulating the maritime Expansion: The group should create a simulation of the navigators' journeys. The simulation can be done through a board game, a video, or even a play. The group is free to choose the form of its execution.

  4. Final Report: The group should write a document reporting the results of the project in the format of a report.

Materials required:

  1. Research materials: books, internet access for online searches, documentaries, etc.
  2. Materials for the Mural Map: cardboard or cardboard, markers, colored pencils, glue, scissors, map prints, etc.
  3. Simulation Materials: Depending on the group's choice, these may include arts and crafts materials, video recording equipment, or items for building a board game.
  4. Materials for the Final Report: a computer with word processing software.

Step-by-step detailed steps to carry out the activity:

  1. Research: Divide into tasks to cover different aspects of the maritime expansion. Each member of the group should compile their findings in a shared document.

  2. Mural Map: Using a world map, plot the routes of the maritime expeditions, mark the territories discovered and colonized, and draw symbolic representations of the commercial and cultural exchanges.

  3. Simulation: Create a script for the simulation, including the characters (sailors, kings, natives), events (voyages, discoveries, interactions), and outcomes (exchanges, conflicts, transformations). Run the simulation using the chosen method.

  4. Final Report: All members of the group should contribute to the writing of the report, which should be organized into the following sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

    • Introduction: Contextualization of the topic, its relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of the project.

    • Development: Explanation of the theory behind the topic, detailed description of the activity, indication of the methodology used and presentation of the results obtained.

    • Conclusion: Recapitulation of the main points of the work, explaining the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the movement of maritime expansion.

    • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for the project.

The project lasts for one month, and each student should dedicate between five and ten hours to complete the work.

Delivery:

At the end of the project, students must submit the Mural Map, the script and the product of the Simulation (whether it is a video, a board game, photos of a theatrical performance, or anything else they have created) and the Final Report. The report should detail the entire process of researching and creating the activities, as well as connecting with the hands-on experience, elucidating the concepts and theories worked with.
